NASA launched nearly 3,400 honeybees into space aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger during its mission STS-41C in April 1984, as part of an unusual scientific experiment designed to study how bees construct their hives in microgravity. The mission, which took place from April 6 to April 13, aimed to compare the structural organization of beehives built in zero-gravity conditions with those constructed under normal Earth gravity. Upon entering the BEM, the bees initially struggled with movement due to the lack of gravity. They collided with walls and had difficulty navigating the enclosed space. However, they quickly adapted, beginning to move more freely within the module. Researchers noted that many of the bees began flying from one location to another, indicating a return to normal behavior. Over the course of the week-long mission, the bees started constructing hexagonal cells, characteristic of their hive-building process on Earth. By the end of the mission, the bees had created approximately 200 square centimeters of comb within the BEM. One notable observation was that the queen bee laid 35 eggs inside the newly constructed comb. The bees also stored honey syrup within the structure, demonstrating that they could perform essential tasks such as feeding and reproduction even in microgravity. Scientists observed that some bees moved along surfaces, others hovered, and some even formed chains up to about 25 centimeters in length. These behaviors suggested that the bees retained much of their typical social structure despite the absence of gravity. A study published in the journal Apidologie in 1985 found that the density, depth, diameter, and wall thickness of the cells produced in space were similar to those made on Earth. However, the orientation of the cells differed significantly, as they did not align consistently in the same direction as they would under normal gravity. Despite these differences, the bees exhibited remarkably low mortality rates, and the queen continued laying eggs, showing that their fundamental biological processes remained largely unaffected by the space environment. Although the bees did not survive the transition back to Earth’s gravity, the experiment provided valuable insights into how organisms adapt to different gravitational conditions. The data collected helped scientists better understand the potential for other insect species to build complex structures in microgravity, with implications for both biology and engineering.
