The fire was extinguished, then reignited.

On August 10, 2026, a fire broke out again near Kranjska Gora, this time on the slopes of Srednji Vrh in the Karavanks mountains. The blaze, which covered approximately one hectare, was being fought by firefighters from several voluntary firefighting associations, including Bohinjska Bistrica, Srednja Vas in Bohinj, Gozd Martuljek, and Kranjska Gora. Helicopters from the Slovenian Armed Forces and three air tractor planes were assisting with aerial firefighting efforts. Firefighters planned to monitor the area overnight and continue suppression efforts early the following day. The fire originated on the inaccessible terrain along the slope of Lepega Vrh above Srednji Vrh. It was initially detected on Friday morning, around 3:30 AM, and was believed to have started due to a gunshot. By Saturday evening, the fire had spread over an area roughly 150 meters by 200 meters. Firefighters from the Prostovoljne Gašilne Društva (PGD) Srednji Vrh and Gozd Martuljek located the fire and confirmed it was not spreading further. They worked alongside aircraft and military helicopters throughout the weekend. Firefighters from multiple local volunteer firefighting groups, including Kranjska Gora, Gozd Martuljek, Dovje, Mojstrana, Podkoren, and Rateče-Planica, were present on the scene. The area was protected by Kranjskogorski gorski reševalci (mountain rescuers). Aerial support came from air tractor planes operated by the Rescue and Protection Authority (Uprava RS za zaščito in reševanje) and two military helicopters. Water was drawn from Jasna Lake using helicopters, while other firefighting units secured the Bohinjsko Jezero area to ensure safe water extraction for suppression operations. During the firefighting operation, a record number of drops, 67, were made by air crews, delivering approximately 201,000 liters of water. Rainfall during the night of Saturday significantly reduced the fire’s intensity and helped extinguish much of the affected area. On Sunday morning, drones were used to survey the site and identify individual hotspots, which were subsequently extinguished through continuous efforts. However, the fire reignited on Monday, affecting an area of about one hectare. Firefighters continued their work, supported once more by air tractor planes and the military helicopter. The situation remained under close watch, with plans to conduct another inspection of the site on Wednesday to determine the next steps in the intervention. In addition to the main fire near Kranjska Gora, smaller wildfires were reported in other parts of the country, some caused by unauthorized fires in nature. In Škofja Loki and Tunjice, firefighters successfully extinguished these incidents. In one case, a firefighter was confronted with hostility after a resident expressed frustration over the disruption caused by firefighting activities. Another incident occurred when a cyclist intentionally drove through the middle of a road with his bike raised toward emergency vehicles, obstructing their path. Across the country, a high level of wildfire risk has been declared since late July, with the coastal region facing an extremely high risk. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and avoid open flames during this period. Violations of these rules can result in fines ranging from €200 to €600 for individuals and up to €6,000 for legal entities. The police in Kranj have emphasized the importance of responsible behavior to prevent such incidents.

Shocking footage: Firefighting helicopter crashes during a firefight

Aircraft and helicopters have limited the hot spots at the volcano near Kranjska Gora

V občini Kranjska Gora so gasilci, helikopter Slovenske vojske in dve letali air tractor nadaljevali gašenje požara na nedostopnem pobočju nad Srednjim Vrhom.
