Otti unveils aircraft named after Chinua Achebe, Onitsha monarch

On a recent day in Lagos, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State participated in a significant event where two new Boeing 737-800NG aircraft were officially unveiled by United Nigeria Airlines. These aircraft were named in honor of two prominent figures: the late Nigerian literary giant Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe. This ceremony marked a notable moment in recognizing the contributions of these individuals to Nigerian culture, leadership, and national development.

The event took place at Nesto Aviation Services, located at Gate 4 Access Road, Local Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. Governor Otti praised the airline's founder, Obiora Okonkwo, for his efforts in honoring distinguished Nigerians through this initiative. Otti emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring those who have made significant contributions to society, stating, "For remembering to honour our people, you will be honoured." His comments highlighted the value placed on acknowledging the achievements of notable citizens.

During the ceremony, Otti also acknowledged the role of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, in promoting private-sector involvement in the aviation industry. He noted that the government had previously seen itself as a competitor to private businesses but now supports such initiatives. Otti commended the establishment of an aircraft leasing company, which he believed would enhance the capabilities of local airlines. He encouraged continued support for such ventures, expressing confidence in their potential to bolster the aviation sector.

The governor also discussed the progress of the proposed Abia Airport project, indicating that construction had reached an advanced stage. He thanked Keyamo for his support of private sector-led reforms and for backing the project. Otti reiterated Abia State's willingness to serve as a hub for United Nigeria Airlines, aligning with the minister's vision for the region's aviation infrastructure.

Okonkwo elaborated on the rationale behind naming the aircraft after Chinua Achebe and Obi Alfred Achebe. He stated that the decision was intentional and symbolic, reflecting the global influence of Achebe's literary works and the exemplary leadership of Obi Alfred Achebe. The ceremony attracted a diverse group of attendees, including political leaders, business executives, traditional rulers, and aviation experts, all of whom lauded the honorees and celebrated Igbo heritage and enterprise.

Achebe himself expressed gratitude for the honor, calling it both humbling and meaningful. He shared reflections on his personal connection with the late Chinua Achebe and offered prayers for the continued success of the airline. Allen Onyema, chairman of Air Peace, voiced confidence in United Nigeria Airlines' trajectory, predicting its emergence as one of the leading airlines in West Africa. He encouraged Nigerians to support indigenous businesses and praised Otti's developmental initiatives, highlighting his role as a leader in the South-East and a source of inspiration for the nation.

The event concluded with the formal unveiling of the two aircraft by Governor Otti, accompanied by applause from dignitaries, industry leaders, and traditional rulers present. Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara commended United Nigeria Airlines for the initiative, emphasizing the resilience, creativity, and global impact of the Igbo people. He urged Igbo entrepreneurs and professionals to take pride in their heritage, asserting that they represent a valuable asset to Nigeria and the broader Black community. Wabara expressed belief in the Igbo people's ability to contribute significantly to national and global development through courage, innovation, and resilience.
