Death of Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, huge loss to Abia – Otti

Tears filled the eyes of mourners as Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo was laid to rest in Abia State, marking the end of a week-long series of funeral rites dedicated to the beloved entertainer. The burial took place at his family home located at 7 Ekubo-Okwaraeke Avenue in Aziukwukwa, Ujari Village, following a somber funeral service held earlier that morning at Mary Slessor School in Amanagwu Village, Arochukwu. The event drew widespread attention, with numerous individuals from the entertainment industry, politics, and business attending to honor the late actor's memory.

Ekubo passed away on 11 May at Evercare Hospital in Lagos due to complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer. His death marked the end of a private struggle with illness that had kept him largely out of the public eye since December 2024. During that time, he withdrew from public appearances and social media to focus on his health. Despite his absence from the limelight, his influence continued to resonate within the Nollywood community and beyond.

The funeral ceremony reflected the deep respect and admiration that Ekubo commanded among his peers and fans. Attendees were dressed in white, symbolizing a celebration of a life "beautifully lived and deeply impactful," according to arrangements made by the Ekubo-Okwaraeke family. One of the most poignant moments occurred when the actor’s casket was brought into the venue, evoking emotions among family members and notable figures in entertainment and business who traveled to Abia State to offer their condolences. Prominent attendees included actress Nancy Isime, Bimbo Ademoye, IK Ogbonna, Mike Godson, Ini Edo, AY Makun, and businessman Obi Cubana.

An emotional tribute was delivered by Ekubo’s longtime bodyguard, known as "Commando." During the wake-keep at the family compound, the bodyguard spoke about how Ekubo was more than an employer—he was a father figure, mentor, and close friend. The heartfelt speech highlighted the deep bond between them, with the bodyguard expressing his devastation over losing someone so significant in his life. He recounted how he spent the entire day at the door calling out to Ekubo, emphasizing the profound impact the actor had on his life.

Ekubo's legacy extends far beyond his contributions to Nollywood. Born on 10 April 1986 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, he gained recognition after finishing as first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition. His acting career began in 2005 with the film Sinners in the House, and he went on to appear in several popular movies such as Áfàméfùnà: An Nwa Boi Story, A Sunday Affair, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, and Weekend Getaway. These roles solidified his status as a respected figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Following the burial, a private reception was held at the Mary Slessor School grounds, providing an opportunity for loved ones and community members to gather and reflect on Ekubo's life and achievements. Governor Alex Otti of Abia State expressed his sorrow over the actor's passing, describing it as a profound loss to Abia, Nigeria's entertainment industry, and the global audience that admired his work. Otti praised Ekubo for being more than an entertainer, highlighting his role as a cultural ambassador who elevated the image of Abia and Nigeria internationally. He emphasized that Ekubo's life was a testament to resilience, creativity, and excellence, serving as an inspiration to young people. The governor encouraged the bereaved family, the people of Arochukwu, and the entertainment industry to find strength and comfort in faith during this difficult time.

Religious elements played a central role in the funeral proceedings, with a sermon delivered by the Resident Pastor of Streams of Joy, Umuahia, Mrs Eno Jerry-Eze. Her message centered around divine providence, reminding attendees that everything occurs under God's watchful gaze. She urged the congregation to reflect on their lives and prepare for the ultimate reckoning. Ekubo's elder sister, Mrs Kelechi Ekubo-Otusi, shared touching memories of her brother, describing him as humble, caring, loving, and deeply religious. She emphasized that he dedicated his life to both God and humanity, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

Ekubo is survived by his wife, parents, siblings, and other relatives. His passing has left a void in the Nigerian creative industry, but his contributions to Nollywood and his embodiment of Abian values ensure that his influence will endure.
