New House anti-drug panel head vows greater oversight, more laws

The newly appointed chair of the House of Representatives' committee on dangerous drugs, Las Piñas Rep. Mark Anthony Santos, announced plans to increase oversight of the government's anti-drug efforts and introduce new legislation to support rehabilitation and dismantle drug networks. Santos emphasized the need for accountability by requiring reports from agencies such as the PDEA, PNP, DOH, DILG, DOJ, and BOC. His priorities include establishing performance metrics related to drug seizures, prosecutions, syndicate dismantling, rehabilitation success, and prevention programs. The committee aims to amend Republic Act No. 9165 to strengthen legal frameworks against drug trafficking, improve anti-money laundering measures, and boost funding for rehabilitation and mental health services. Santos replaced Bukidnon Rep. Jonathan Keith Flores, who was reassigned as Deputy Minority Leader.
