Ownership & classification
Founded: 1985
Ownership
The Philippine Daily Inquirer was founded in 1985 and was long controlled by the Rufino-Prieto family through Inquirer Holdings, Inc. In 2017 the family divested, and tycoon Ramon S. Ang (head of conglomerate San Miguel Corporation) acquired roughly an 85% majority stake, with Manny V. Pangilinan's group holding about 15%; the paper has since been restructured (publishing moved to Inquirer Interactive, Inc.). Editorial control thus now sits with Ang, a businessman with extensive government and corporate ties.
Funding
The paper is financed commercially through advertising and circulation/subscription revenue. It has historically been vulnerable to advertising pressure (e.g., a months-long pro-Estrada ad boycott), and is now backed by the deep pockets of its conglomerate owners rather than by state or party money.
Affiliation & stance
Once a fiercely independent, centre-left title, the Inquirer is now majority-owned by tycoon Ramon Ang, whose San Miguel empire is closely entwined with successive Philippine governments and large state-linked contracts. Because editorial control rests with a politically connected oligarch rather than independent commercial management, it is best classed as DEPENDENT.

Groups renew call to repeal anti-terror laws
Human rights groups in the Philippines have called for the repeal of two anti-terrorism laws, arguing that they have been misused to suppress political dissent and violate civil liberties. The Anti-Terrorism Act and the Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act have reportedly been used to arrest and detain activists and ordinary citizens, with over 256 individuals charged under these laws. Critics claim the laws allow for arbitrary designations of individuals or groups as terrorists without proper legal procedures, leading to asset freezes and restrictions on humanitarian work. Activists argue that these laws have failed to achieve their intended goals and have instead become tools for political repression.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reports that 57 municipalities in the Bicol region, two cities, and the entire province of Catanduanes have been designated as 'insurgency-free' by the military under the Stable Internal Peace and Security (SIPS) program. This designation follows the neutralization of 66 New People’s Army (NPA) members between January and July 2024, including four killed, one captured, two arrested, and 59 who surrendered. The criteria for SIPS status include dismantling guerrilla fronts, no CTG-related violence for over a year, absence of KKER barangays, and functioning ITDS systems. Additional municipalities in Sorsogon and Masbate are anticipated to join the list as security operations progress. Officials highlighted collaborative efforts among military, police, government agencies, and communities in achieving peace.

PRO-13 reiterated its commitment to maintaining high standards of conduct within the police organization.

Maynilad’s ‘buffers’ to ensure adequate water supply despite El Niño
Maynilad Water Services, Inc., which supplies water to Metro Manila and Cavite, has stated that it has increased its buffer capacity to maintain a stable water supply despite the declining water level at the Angat Dam and the potential impact of the El Niño phenomenon. The Angat Dam currently stands at 159.90 meters above sea level, significantly below its normal high level of 212 meters and the minimum operating level of 180 meters. This decline mirrors similar drops observed during past El Niño periods, notably in 2019 and 2010, which led to water rationing in the region. To mitigate risks, Maynilad has expanded its water treatment capacities, including those at the Laguna Lake treatment plants and the New Water program, which produces potable water from treated wastewater. These measures aim to reduce reliance on the Angat Dam and enhance overall water security.

Angara highlighted the need for proactive communication through PTA meetings to identify potential issues early and foster trust. Additionally, he encouraged PTAs to organize activities like parenting seminars, digital safety workshops, and community dialogues to strengthen school communities.
