With the start of the new school year, students returning to their accommodation in student dorms will have until August 31 to apply for available spots. According to the Slovenian Association of Student Dormitories, there are enough beds in student dorms, although some dorms had enrollment restrictions. The issue of insufficient capacity persists in student housing, particularly in Ljubljana and Koper. Enrollment in student dorms without restrictions was open until July 3 (with restrictions until July 10), and applications for remaining spots can still be submitted until August 31. In the academic year 2025/2026, a total of 6,755 students were enrolled in student dorms. “From the database we can see that enrollment has been stable and shows an annual increase of more than 700 students,” stated Dragan Kojić, president of the Slovenian Association of Student Dormitories, for STA. While overall availability seems sufficient, he noted that some dorms in Ljubljana and Maribor have enrollment limits. Demographic projections suggest future generations will be smaller, leading him to expect greater emphasis on improving the quality of housing rather than expanding availability and access. The base cost of accommodation for the academic year 2026/2027 in student dorms is set at €298.20. This includes the costs of food provision and housing. Families with multiple students living together in the same or different dorms can claim a subsidy for accommodation. The amount of the subsidy equals the base cost of accommodation, which parents typically submit upon enrollment in September, according to the ministry’s reports. Shortage of capacity remains a challenge for all three universities' student dorms On Tuesday, the deadline for submitting requests for extended stays or inclusion on the priority list for admission to student dorms expired. The exact number of submitted applications is not yet available. A total of 12,883 subsidized accommodation spots have been allocated, including 32 for students with recognized international protection and temporary protection. On the Primorska region, despite efforts, there is a shortage of subsidized beds, according to the University of Primorska's student dorms in their work plan for 2026. In the academic year 2025/2026, nearly 5,800 students were enrolled at the university, while the number of subsidized beds allocated across the entire area was 1,453, of which 544 were under the university’s ownership. Similarly, the Ljubljana Student Dorms (ŠDL) have pointed out the need for additional accommodation capacities. Based on current trends, they estimate that at least ten percent more beds would be needed. Some of these will be obtained through the planned student dorm on Roški and the project along the Danube Street, according to Aleksandar Matković, head of the sector for student affairs at ŠDL. At the Student Dorms in Maribor, additional capacities could enable faster accommodation for interested students before the start of the academic year and provide more affordable housing to a larger number of students, according to officials from the Student Dorms in Maribor. According to data from the ministry, the monthly subsidy for the academic year 2026/2027 in public student dorms, student-dormitory complexes, and student dorms is €41.46, while in private student dorms and with private individuals, it amounts to €103.36.
