Two used Opel models, Crossland X and Meriva, are drawing attention due to recurring technical issues often discovered during inspections, according to reports from Auto Bild based on TÜV test results published August 13. The primary concern involves oil leaks, which can easily go unnoticed unless inspected thoroughly beneath the vehicle. These findings highlight potential risks buyers should consider before purchasing these models second-hand. The Crossland X, produced between 2017 and 2024, shares its technical foundation with the Peugeot 2008 and Citroën C3 Aircross. It has become popular among buyers in Germany, with starting prices around €8,500. Its appeal lies in elevated seating positions, practical interiors, and a foldable rear bench. However, TÜV assessments reveal above-average sensitivity in suspension components such as springs and shock absorbers. Worn brake discs appear more frequently than desired, particularly in older models. Issues with steering systems have also been noted in some instances. Several recalls have affected the Crossland X over the years. Problems include cable harnesses, rear wheel hubs, diesel particulate filters, brake boosters, and rear cross members. In 2025, a recall was initiated due to issues with the camshaft chain, which could potentially lead to engine failure in severe cases. In contrast, the Meriva B, manufactured from 2010 to 2017, is available at significantly lower prices, with starting costs in Germany around €2,000. Despite being an older model, it offers practical features such as high seating positions, ample interior space, and reverse-opening rear doors. According to TÜV evaluations, the Meriva performs better in certain areas compared to the newer Crossland X. Its suspension is more robust, and issues with brake discs occur less frequently. Nevertheless, known faults include fuel pumps, radiator fans, ignition switches, immobilizers, and engine control electronics. Recalls related to seat mechanisms, steering systems, safety belt buckles, and airbags have also impacted the Meriva. Both models face similar challenges regarding oil leaks, which are particularly concerning because they can remain undetected during routine checks. Buyers are advised to inspect the underside of the engine, transmission, and protective covers, as signs of leakage often become visible only from below. Data collected from both models indicates that vehicles aged two to three years have approximately 10 percent of serious defects, slightly higher than the average of 6.5 percent for all cars. For vehicles four to five years old, this percentage rises to 17 percent, compared to an average of 10 percent. Among six to seven-year-old models, serious defects were found in 20.1 percent of vehicles, meaning roughly one in every five cars in this age group had significant issues. Despite these concerns, neither the Crossland X nor the Meriva should be automatically avoided. Both offer substantial value for money and can serve as highly practical used cars. However, prior to signing a purchase agreement, buyers are strongly recommended to lift the vehicle onto a lift and carefully examine the area underneath. This inspection can uncover critical issues that might otherwise remain hidden, ensuring a more informed decision-making process.
