A new report has revealed that two used Opel models, Meriva and Crossland X, are prone to technical issues, particularly related to oil leaks. According to data compiled by the German and Austrian independent inspection body TÜV, these vehicles often show signs of deterioration during routine inspections, with problems becoming more frequent as they age. The findings were published by Auto Bild on August 13, highlighting concerns among potential buyers looking for reliable second-hand cars. The Crossland X, produced from 2017 to 2024, shares its platform with the Peugeot 2008 and Citroën C3 Aircross. It is known for its practical interior and flexible seating arrangements, making it popular among families. However, TÜV reports indicate that older models suffer from worn-out suspension components, damaged brake discs, and other mechanical failures. Issues such as faulty wiring harnesses, rear wheel hub units, diesel particulate filters, and electronic braking systems have been noted. Some 2025 models have even been recalled due to problems with the drive shaft linkage, which could potentially lead to engine failure. The Meriva, manufactured between 2010 and 2017, is currently available at significantly lower prices than the Crossland X. Its high seating position and spacious interior make it appealing to many buyers. Despite this, TÜV records show that the Meriva also faces challenges, including fuel pump failures, cooling fan malfunctions, key fob issues, and motor control electronics. Recalls have been issued for problems affecting seats, steering systems, seat belts, and airbags. While the Meriva’s suspension system is generally more robust than that of the Crossland X, both models share common flaws. One of the most critical issues identified by TÜV inspectors is oil leakage, which can easily go unnoticed during a quick test drive or while inspecting the vehicle from above. In some cases, oil leaks become increasingly common as the vehicle ages. For instance, among Merivas aged six to seven years, approximately 20.1 percent showed serious defects, meaning nearly one in five vehicles in that category had significant issues. Similarly, Crossland X models in the same age range exhibited a higher rate of problems compared to the average. When considering the overall condition of used vehicles, the data indicates that around 10% of models aged two to three years experience major faults, slightly above the general average of 6.5%. As vehicles grow older, the percentage of problematic models increases further, reaching 17% for those aged four to five years and 20.1% for those six to seven years old. These figures suggest that while both models remain viable options for budget-conscious buyers, they require careful evaluation before purchase. To ensure a thorough assessment, potential buyers should lift the vehicle using a jack and examine the underside for signs of oil leaks, transmission damage, and wear on protective covers. This approach allows for a more accurate identification of hidden issues that might otherwise go undetected during a surface-level inspection. The report concludes that while neither model should be automatically avoided, prospective owners must take extra precautions to avoid unexpected repair costs.
