When Plečnik's architecture and sacred music intertwine

On Wednesday, September 16, the choir Ave performed a concert of sacred music at the Great Hall of NUK as part of the concert cycle 'PLEČNIK IN A-CAPPELLA.' This cycle, first held in 2020, takes place annually between June and October at five picturesque locations designed by architect Plečnik. The event aims to enhance the audience's experience through the interplay of Plečnik’s architecture and vocal masterpieces. In this year’s seventh season, four concerts have already taken place, featuring various choirs and compositions ranging from traditional sacred music to modern choral works. The September concert included pieces such as parts of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom by Sergei Rachmaninoff and spiritual songs by contemporary composers. The concert also featured poetry by Srecko Kosovel, marking the 100th anniversary of his death, set to music by three older Slovenian composers. The concert concluded with folk songs, including 'Red Rose' by Erik Esenvald and 'In Winter, Roses Do Not Bloom' by Ambrož Čopi. Starting in 2025, Ambrož Čopi will lead the choir Ave, which has been active since 1984 and is considered one of Slovenia’s most important chamber choirs.
