Gina Hinojosa prepares to fight for governorship in Texas: We are in a statistical tie with Abbott

Gina Hinojosa, a Democratic state representative from San Antonio, has positioned herself as a formidable contender in the race for Texas governor, claiming she is statistically tied with current Governor Greg Abbott ahead of the 2026 election. According to six recent polls released by her campaign on August 13, the contest appears to be within the margin of error, suggesting a near-equal chance for both candidates. The data indicates that Hinojosa is gaining ground among key demographics such as independents, moderates, Latinos, young voters, and African American voters. The polling data comes from several reputable firms including Texas Public Opinion Research, Fox News, Texas A&M/ReconMR/Siena, BlueLabs, GBAO, and Cygnal. These surveys show that the gap between Hinojosa and Abbott has narrowed significantly over the past year. In January, Abbott held an eight-point lead, but by July and August, the difference had been reduced to just one point. Recent polls place Abbott below 50 percent support in nearly all cases, which marks a notable shift from his previous standing. According to Hinojosa’s campaign analysis, Abbott's average advantage was around five points during the 2022 elections, while current measurements show a much smaller margin, ranging from one to three points. Hinojosa leads by up to 17 points among independents and 21 points among moderates. Among Latino voters, her lead reaches 38 points, surpassing the maximum achieved by former candidate Beto O'Rourke in his 2022 bid against Abbott. She also holds a commanding lead of 43 points among voters under 30 years old and 71 points among African American voters. Hinojosa’s visibility has increased dramatically since October, when her name recognition stood at approximately 30 percent. Now, it ranges between 60 and 80 percent. Her net favorability rating stands at up to 18 points. Among MAGA voters, 11 percent have a positive view of her, and 4 percent say they would support her. Additionally, 18 percent of Republicans who do not identify as MAGA and 9 percent of voters who supported former Governor John Cornyn (Paxton) indicate they might back Hinojosa. Hinojosa has outlined specific policy proposals aimed at addressing education and living costs in Texas. She plans to audit the Texas Education Agency to redirect more resources toward classrooms. On economic issues, she proposed distributing $1,500 to each household through the state’s emergency fund, which currently totals $27 billion. This amount represents a significant increase from its historical level of $10 billion. Hinojosa has been traveling across the state to engage with both Democrats and Republicans. She described the political landscape as being "completely mixed in 2026," linking this situation to a growing sentiment against those currently holding office. Voters, according to Hinojosa, are not suddenly embracing the Democratic Party but rather expressing a desire for change. She noted receiving support from "MAGA moms" concerned about educational conditions and highlighted that more than 150 schools could close, many located in San Antonio. To mobilize support without relying on partisan identification, Hinojosa launched TeamTexasPublicSchools.com, aiming to bring together individuals committed to defending public education. She emphasized her appeal to these "MAGA moms" due to her educational policies, which include auditing the Texas Education Agency to ensure resources reach classrooms effectively. Hinojosa explained her belief in the possibility of winning by emphasizing her commitment to staying close to her family and community. She has maintained a consistent presence throughout the state, engaging directly with constituents and highlighting the need for a new direction in governance. Her strategy focuses on building broad-based support across different voter groups, leveraging her growing name recognition and favorable ratings among key demographics.
