La Nación was founded in 1870 by former Argentine president Bartolomé Mitre. In 1909 the founder's heirs created the company S.A. La Nación, whose by-laws require that owners be descendants of the Mitre family, so the paper remains family-controlled to this day. The Mitre family runs it as the flagship of Grupo La Nación, a multimedia group that also owns the cable news channel LN+ and magazine titles; the family also co-owns the newsprint maker Papel Prensa together with Grupo Clarín and the state.
