European car giant "employs" 100 sheep as it prepares to lay off some 100,000 workers

Volkswagen Group has launched an unusual initiative in Poland, employing 100 sheep to maintain grass beneath thousands of solar panels while preparing to reduce its workforce by around 100,000 employees over the coming years. The project, based at the Volkswagen Poznań plant in Września, combines renewable energy production with sustainable land management, using a herd of native Polish Wielkopolska sheep to keep vegetation under control. The initiative, part of an agrivoltaic project developed in collaboration with Quanta Energy, integrates solar power generation, livestock farming, and scientific research. The solar farm, with an installed capacity of 18.3 megawatts, is among the largest industrial photovoltaic systems in Europe. It is expected to generate enough electricity annually to meet approximately a quarter of the energy needs of the factory in Września. Instead of traditional mowing equipment, the company opted for a more ecological approach. To maintain the grass at an appropriate height, 100 sheep have been introduced onto the site. These animals freely graze among more than 31,000 solar panels, ensuring the vegetation remains manageable without specialized machinery. The presence of the sheep provides them with shelter from harsh weather conditions such as heavy rain, intense sunlight, and extreme temperatures. In addition to generating clean energy, the project carries a scientific dimension. Researchers from the University of Poznań are monitoring how the presence of sheep affects biodiversity, soil quality, microclimate, and animal welfare. Their findings aim to determine whether this model can serve as a viable example of sustainable management for large-scale solar farms. This initiative comes at a time when Volkswagen is planning a significant reduction in its workforce. Over the next eight to nine years, the company expects to lay off more than 100,000 employees globally. While the focus of these layoffs has drawn considerable attention, the innovative use of sheep in maintaining the solar farm has sparked interest and discussion within both industry and environmental circles. The decision to employ sheep reflects a broader shift towards integrating nature-based solutions into industrial operations. By leveraging local fauna, Volkswagen aims to minimize operational costs, enhance sustainability, and promote coexistence between human activities and the environment. This approach aligns with growing corporate commitments to green innovation and responsible resource management.
