Dyson introduces electric toothbrushes with camera

Dyson has unveiled its latest innovation in oral care with the launch of the CameraJet, an electric toothbrush equipped with a camera and artificial intelligence features. The device, priced at 480 euros, combines AI-powered cavity detection with automated water jet cleaning. The product marks a new direction for Dyson, which is known primarily for its vacuum cleaners but has expanded into other areas such as headphones and cleaning devices. The CameraJet falls under the category of mouth care products, offering users a high-tech alternative to traditional brushing methods. The CameraJet includes a built-in camera that can be accessed via a mobile app through Wi-Fi connectivity. This feature allows users to view real-time video footage of their teeth and gums, providing a close-up inspection of their dental health. However, the camera's resolution is relatively low at 0.1 megapixels, translating to approximately 365 x 274 pixels in a 4:3 format based on product photos. The AI analyzes the camera feed to detect gaps between teeth. When a gap is identified, the device activates its water jet function to clean these spaces effectively. This feature aims to replace the need for dental floss, making oral hygiene more efficient. The AI was trained using over 470,000 images to recognize different types of dental structures accurately. The CameraJet also offers three cleaning modes and additional features such as alerts for excessive pressure during brushing. These functions aim to enhance user experience while ensuring proper dental care. The device comes with a charging station that includes a reservoir for refilling water, allowing users to recharge the brush either through the station or via a USB-C cable with magnetic pogo pins. Two replacement brush heads are included, though Dyson emphasizes that only original parts will work optimally with the CameraJet. The cost of replacement parts is notable, with a pack of two brush heads priced at 30 euros. Dyson also sells a non-foaming toothpaste specifically designed to improve camera recognition, available in 75 milliliters for 10 euros (neutral) or 12 euros (mint). Users can opt for any non-foaming toothpaste, which is a welcome rarity in the market. Additionally, the battery of the brush can be easily replaced, a feature that adds convenience for long-term use. Dyson highlights the scientific formula of the toothpaste on its product page but does not include recommendations from dentists, which is common for similar products. While the effectiveness of the water jet system in cleaning interdental spaces remains to be tested, the company plans to conduct a review of the CameraJet as part of its ongoing evaluation of high-tech oral care devices.
