Dyson CameraJet: electric toothbrush with camera costs 480 euros

Dyson has unveiled its latest innovation in personal care with the launch of the CameraJet, an electric toothbrush equipped with a built-in camera and a specialized mouthwash delivery system. The device was introduced on Tuesday during an event in Paris and is available for purchase immediately, though at a steep price tag of €480. The CameraJet represents a significant leap into dental technology for the British company, known primarily for its vacuum cleaners, air purifiers, and fans. The CameraJet features a miniature camera measuring just one millimetre in size, capable of capturing images at a resolution of 100,000 pixels. This camera takes 28 images per second, sending them to an algorithm designed for machine learning. The system is intended to identify gaps between teeth. When such a gap is detected, a membrane pump within the brush releases a conical jet of mouthwash through the space in under 100 milliseconds. According to Dyson, this process aims to clean interdental spaces simultaneously with brushing, eliminating the need for traditional flossing. The mouthwash is stored in a container holding up to 12.5 millilitres, located in the handle of the brush. It can be refilled using a charging station included in the product package. The battery life, according to Dyson, lasts up to ten days or supports 14 cleaning sessions. Connectivity is achieved via both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing users to monitor the camera feed in real time through the MyDyson app. Dyson assures customers that the captured images are neither stored nor transmitted to the cloud. To ensure optimal performance, the camera requires unobstructed visibility inside the mouth. For this reason, Dyson includes its own specially formulated toothpaste and mouthwash in the set. These products are non-foaming and free from sodium lauryl sulfate, ensuring they do not interfere with the camera’s functionality. The €480 set also includes a refill and charging station, a travel case, and two brush heads. Replacement parts must be sourced directly from Dyson, as the company does not offer third-party alternatives for these components. Each brush head contains an embedded RFID chip that alerts the toothbrush about how long the attachment has been in use. Dyson claims the effectiveness of the CameraJet based on internal laboratory tests. The company states that the brush removes up to 69 percent more plaque than leading premium electric toothbrushes currently on the market. Development of the CameraJet took six years, during which Dyson filed 38 patents. Dyson's foray into the toothbrush market aligns with its broader strategy of applying high-tech solutions to everyday objects. The company previously launched the Dyson Zone headphones in 2022, which featured an integrated air purifier and a visor over the user’s mouth and nose, priced at $950 in the United States. Two years later, Dyson introduced the OnTrac headphones, which omitted the air purification feature but still commanded a price of €500. These ventures highlight Dyson's ongoing effort to expand beyond its core product lines into new consumer electronics markets.
