Best small airports: Vienna

Wien has ranked 13th among the world's best smaller airports in a recent evaluation, according to the World Consumer Airport Index conducted by the Consumer Choice Center, a consumer protection NGO. The ranking assessed 35 smaller airports with annual passenger numbers up to 47.2 million. Vienna’s position marks its second appearance in this category, though it faces criticism over long security wait times, inefficient gate-terminal connections, and low competition levels. This year’s ranking included evaluations of both the top 25 largest international airports and the best 35 smaller ones globally. The index was based on multiple criteria such as location, transportation accessibility, availability of shops and restaurants, and other service and infrastructure features. Düsseldorf Airport secured the top spot among smaller airports for the second consecutive year, attributed to its extensive range of services and amenities for passengers. Zurich improved its standing to second place, largely due to reduced security check waiting times, now just three minutes. Copenhagen placed third, although limited nighttime operations and the absence of ride-hailing services like Uber were noted as contributing factors. Other notable entries in the top ten of the smaller airport rankings include Helsinki, Malpensa, Oslo Gardermoen, Munich, Vancouver International, Brussels, and Berlin Brandenburg. These airports were praised for their efficient operations, convenient access, and high-quality facilities. The results reflect a broader trend of improving service standards and customer satisfaction in the aviation sector, particularly among mid-sized airports that often serve as regional hubs. In contrast, Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s largest, performed poorly in the larger airport rankings, placing 23rd out of 25. It ranks among the worst globally, coming in at 51st out of 60. A major factor affecting its performance was the premature shutdown of the newly introduced Skyline train connecting Terminals 1 and 3 after just one month. Passengers now rely on longer shuttle bus routes instead. Additional issues include inadequate signage and delays in opening Terminal 3, which have contributed to a poor overall experience for travelers. Globally, air travel saw a decline in passenger traffic during early and mid-2026 compared to the previous year, with a 3.4 percent drop. Contributing factors include the ongoing impact of the Iran conflict, which has led to decreased oil production and higher jet fuel prices. Airlines have been forced to reduce flight offerings and cancel unprofitable routes. Airports facing operational challenges, such as Frankfurt, face even greater difficulties in retaining passengers under these conditions. The findings highlight the importance of continuous improvement in airport management and service delivery, especially in response to evolving traveler expectations and economic pressures. As the industry continues to adapt to changing circumstances, the focus on enhancing efficiency, convenience, and passenger satisfaction will remain critical for maintaining competitiveness in the global aviation landscape.
