Baule District, Tula Chiefdom of Gombe State: A respectful appeal for inclusive development

The Baule District, part of the historic Tula Chiefdom in Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State, has issued a formal appeal for improved infrastructure and inclusive development. The district, which holds significant historical importance as the former headquarters of the Tangale, Waja Native Authority during the colonial era, is currently grappling with persistent challenges related to transportation and public services despite its contributions to agriculture, democracy, and regional stability. The appeal comes amid ongoing efforts by the Gombe State government under Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya to develop infrastructure across the state. The Baule District is one of three constituent areas within the Tula Chiefdom, alongside Kaltungo, Billiri, Balanga, and Shongom Local Government Areas. Its historical significance is underscored by its role in shaping the administrative landscape of southern Gombe. However, contemporary issues such as inadequate road networks and insufficient public services continue to hinder the district's development. Despite this, the people of Baule have consistently participated in elections and upheld democratic values, contributing to the broader peace and progress of Gombe State. Several key road corridors in the district face severe accessibility problems, especially during the rainy season. According to community records and field observations from 2024 to 2026, routes such as Ture, Bule, Kaltin, Lafiya, Lungure, Dogon Ruwa, Nahuta, Kaltin, Baule Gari, Bundibunde, Sabon Gari, Dogon Ruwa, and Bule, Kaltin, Jalingo remain poorly maintained. These roads serve critical functions for farmers, students, healthcare professionals, traders, and traditional leaders. Efforts by local communities to maintain and improve these roads using limited resources have been documented in photographs and videos from 2024 and 2025. However, experts emphasize that long-term solutions require substantial public investment and technical support beyond the capabilities of local authorities or residents. Beyond transportation, the Baule District faces pressing needs in education, healthcare, clean water supply, rural electrification, and tourism. Enhancing these sectors could significantly boost agricultural output, create more economic opportunities, and improve overall living standards. The district's call for inclusive governance underscores the importance of ensuring that qualified individuals from Baule have equal opportunities to participate in public service roles. This approach aims to build public trust and foster greater social unity. In light of current financial constraints, the Baule Community has proposed that even if all planned road projects cannot be immediately executed, priority should be given to establishing at least one reliable all-season access route connecting the district to the broader road network. This measure would facilitate better access to health facilities, educational institutions, marketplaces, and government services while supporting agricultural activities and emergency responses. The appeal from the Baule District highlights the complex interplay between historical significance, present-day challenges, and future aspirations. As the region continues to evolve, addressing these infrastructural and developmental gaps will be crucial in ensuring sustainable growth and equitable progress for all communities within Gombe State.
