Ownership

Tagesschau is the flagship national news brand of ARD, Germany's consortium of regional public-law broadcasting corporations (the Länder broadcasters such as NDR, WDR, BR, etc.). It is produced by ARD-aktuell, the joint news operation based at NDR in Hamburg, where the first Tagesschau aired in December 1952. ARD is a public, publicly accountable broadcaster owned by no private interest.

Funding

Funded chiefly by the Rundfunkbeitrag, the mandatory household broadcasting fee (about 18.36 euros per month) levied on all households, companies and institutions, which finances ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio; minor additional revenue comes from limited advertising.

Affiliation & stance

As ARD's news service, Tagesschau is a public-service broadcaster bound by statutory impartiality and independence from government, with a broadly centrist stance overseen by pluralistic broadcasting councils. Because it is a licence-fee-funded public broadcaster rather than a private or party-controlled outlet, it is classified STATE (public-broadcaster sense).

Ukraine reports two dead after night attacks by Russia, with the death toll in Kiev rising to 30.

At least two people were killed and eight injured in Russian air strikes on the Sumy region and Kryvyj Rih in Ukraine during the night of Thursday to Friday, according to Ukrainian authorities. This follows a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv earlier in the week which killed at least 30 people and injured around 100 others. In response to the attacks, Ukraine conducted missile strikes on Belgorod in Russia, causing a fire at an energy facility and killing one woman, according to Russian media. The overnight strike on the city of Romny in the Sumy region hit a residential building, killing two women and injuring a man, reported regional administrator Oleh Hryhorov via Telegram. Another seven people were injured in a missile strike on Kryvyj Rih, according to military city administrator Oleksandr Vilkul. In Kyiv, teams discovered three more dead bodies during the night, bringing the total number of victims to 30, according to Reuters citing Ukrainian health authorities. Kyiv's military administrator Tymur Tkačenko stated that the attack injured 99 people. Moscow claimed the extensive attack was a response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including those carried

Due to radio interference, train service resumes after a complete shutdown.

On Tuesday evening, June 24, 2026, a nationwide disruption caused by a malfunction in Germany's digital railway communication system (GSM-R) brought all train traffic across the country to a complete halt. The outage lasted approximately two hours, stranding numerous passengers and creating long queues at train stations. By around 0:30 AM, the first trains resumed operation, but delays and service disruptions were expected to continue into Wednesday morning. Deutsche Bahn (DB) attributed the stoppage to a technical failure in the GSM-R network, which is critical for modern rail operations. While some passengers received taxi vouchers and hotel coupons, others reported difficulties finding accommodations, particularly in cities like Frankfurt. Despite efforts by IT specialists to resolve the issue quickly, DB did not provide detailed information about the cause of the malfunction. The incident affected not only passenger trains but also regional services, private railways, and freight traffic.

Federal government tax reform: Why relief could blow up

The article analyzes the German federal government’s tax reform and warns that the promised relief for families may not materialize due to rising labor costs and additional financial obligations. While the government claims families could receive up to 642 euros in relief, experts argue this figure does not account for future increases in social contributions and new requirements like capital pensions. The reform is expected to have limited impact on many individuals, particularly singles and higher earners, who might end up paying more after factoring in these additional costs.

Early World Cup exit for Germany: What went wrong?

Germany's football national team suffered an early exit from the World Cup by losing 3:4 to Paraguay in a penalty shootout during the round of 16. This marks the third consecutive failure to advance beyond the group stage at a World Cup, having previously been eliminated in the group phase in 2018 and 2022. The match ended 1:1 after extra time, with Germany's players failing to convert their penalties, including Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade, and Jonathan Tah. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made strong saves but could not prevent the defeat. Since winning the World Cup in 2014, Germany has not won any knockout game at a World Cup. This was the first loss in a World Cup penalty shootout for the German team, which had previously won all four such encounters. Several key players underperformed, including captain Joshua Kimmich, Florian Wirtz, and Jamal Musiala, who struggled due to injury and poor form. Defensive issues and lack of attacking momentum were also significant factors. Injuries to players like Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl further weakened the squad. Coach Julian Nagelsmann faced criticism for his tactical decisions, including retaining Kimmich as a right-back despite his struggles

Putin recognizes the oil map for the first time

Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged for the first time that Russia is building 'some oil reserves' during a meeting focused on energy issues. He emphasized the need to strengthen domestic oil production and increase output. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continued their attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, detonating an oil purification plant in the southern Krasnodar region, which produces around four million tons of crude oil annually. The Krasnodar region is one of Russia's largest oil-producing areas located near the Black Sea. On Tuesday, Ukrainian forces launched large-scale air strikes on Sevastopol, the largest city on Crimea, including attacks on oil facilities. In response, Russia, which annexed Crimea in 2014, has restricted fuel sales to the public to counteract the energy shortages. According to reports, these attacks have had no impact on the front line. During an interview with a Russian state television station, Putin described the Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure as an attempt to destabilize Russian society. He stated that Ukraine's goal was to halt the deployment of Russian military units to improve their position in arms control talks.

In June 2026, Germany saw a 15.7% increase in new car registrations compared to the previous year, totaling 296,378 units. The share of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) rose significantly to 28.4%, up from 18.4% in June 2025, with 84,057 new electric cars registered—a 78.2% increase year-on-year. Hybrid vehicles also grew by 16.8%, reaching 39% of total registrations. SUVs maintained their dominance with 37.5% market share, while compact cars declined slightly.

It highlights the DFB's ongoing leadership crisis, including the departure of sports director Rudi Völler and the potential future of Geschäftsführer Andreas Rettig. Blast in Monaco: Ukrainian woman from Germany suspected

A 39-year-old Ukrainian woman from Germany is suspected of involvement in a serious explosion at a residential building in Monaco, which injured three people. According to authorities, she fled the scene using a rented car with German license plates, traveling through France and Italy back to Germany. The suspect is being sought by Interpol for attempted murder, placing a bomb with criminal intent, and membership in a criminal organization. Authorities searched a property in the German region of Main-Taunus where the suspect had rented an apartment, as well as a vehicle she used. The explosion occurred Monday evening at the entrance of a residential complex, with surveillance footage showing a person wearing a black hat triggering the device remotely as the victims entered the building. Investigators believe the attack was planned with others, citing the complexity of the explosive device and evidence that the suspect visited the location multiple times, including once while dressed as a man. Two men were briefly detained but later released due to lack of evidence linking them to the crime. While the identities of the victims have not been officially confirmed, reports suggest they

"Sensible" Solutions to Sickness Benefits

The German coalition government has announced plans to implement a new regulation requiring employees to provide a medical certificate of incapacity starting from their first day of illness, moving from the current requirement of the fourth day. This decision follows criticism over the proposed changes to sick leave rules. SPD leader Lars Klingbeil emphasized the need for 'reasonable' implementation of these measures, while Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) highlighted the importance of digital solutions such as video consultations to ensure accessibility. The ruling CDU faction argues that during the pandemic, barriers to obtaining sick leave certificates were lowered through telephone certification, which they now seek to reverse. However, there is uncertainty around potential exceptions and the practical effects of this change. Federal Labor Minister Bärbel Bas stated that the proposal was not her own and that the legislative process would determine any necessary adjustments. North Rhine-Westphalia’s Minister President Hendrik Wüst acknowledged ongoing questions surrounding the policy.

Debate on the firewall: the AfD asks no one these questions

The article discusses two contrasting situations involving the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The first involves a friendly interaction between AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund and CDU politician Guido Heuer during a public event in Halberstadt, where they appear to have a cordial relationship despite their political differences. This moment sparked controversy, with some criticizing such interactions during the election campaign. Heuer later had to publicly reaffirm his commitment to the 'Unvereinbarkeitsbeschluss' (incompatibility decision), which prohibits cooperation with the AfD. The second situation involves Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, a deputy leader of the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt, who stated in a podcast that the AfD would not consider forming a coalition with the CDU. However, this statement received no significant reaction, unlike similar actions by CDU politicians, which face scrutiny. The article highlights that while the AfD appears divided on the issue of cooperating with the CDU, the public does not hold them accountable in the same way as the CDU.

Coalition Committee: These are the key points of the reform package

The German coalition government, consisting of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Christian Social Union (CSU), and Social Democratic Party (SPD), has announced a comprehensive reform package aimed at boosting economic growth and employment. The reforms include tax relief for middle-income earners, abolishing telephone sick leave certification, and introducing stricter measures against fraudulent sick leave certificates. Key elements of the plan involve increasing basic and child tax allowances, raising child benefits, and implementing a higher tax rate for high incomes starting in 2027. The package also includes labor market reforms such as allowing longer fixed-term contracts and increased financial incentives for employers. These changes aim to improve working conditions and reduce bureaucratic burdens.
