Ownership

Proto Thema is a Greek Sunday newspaper and news website founded in 2005 by Themos Anastasiadis, Makis Triantafyllopoulos and Tassos Karamitsos. Anastasiadis became sole owner and CEO of Proto Thema A.E. (which also owns Thema Radio and several magazines) until his death in 2019, after which co-founder Tassos Karamitsos became publisher; the parent company, Proto Thema Publishing SA, does not publicly disclose its current shareholding.

Funding

It is financed largely through advertising and newsstand sales as Greece's highest-selling Sunday paper, plus digital advertising. It has been repeatedly accused of being closely tied to, and benefiting financially from third-party sources linked to, the governing New Democracy party.

Affiliation & stance

Once seen as liberal, Proto Thema is now strongly favourable to the centre-right New Democracy government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with critics alleging undisclosed pro-government funding and opaque ownership. Because of those reported government-aligned financial ties and lack of ownership transparency, it leans toward DEPENDENT despite the site's INDEPENDENT label; its lean is right of centre rather than the listed CENTER_RIGHT-to-RIGHT, and I flag the INDEPENDENT tag as questionable.

On the air... Monaco's participation in the French Basketball Championship 2026-27

The Monaco basketball team, which won the title against Bourg, has been denied approval to participate in the 2026-27 French league season by the French Basketball Economic Control Authority (DNCCG) due to insufficient financial guarantees for the club's sustainability. The decision is not final, as Monaco has appealed to the French Federation, with the appeal expected to be reviewed on July 20. Additionally, a new hearing before the Court of Monaco is scheduled for July 10, which could determine the club's future. The financial issues stem from Alexei Fedorov, the club's main figure, who lost control of his assets due to sanctions related to the Russia-Ukraine war. The club's business model relied almost entirely on Fedorov's funding, and state support from the Principality of Monaco covered wages and operational costs until June 30. However, this support will not continue under the current administration. There is consideration of transferring club shares to creditors for a symbolic amount, and Fedorov has reportedly renounced his financial claims from investments estimated at around €100 million. Efforts to find new investors continue, with former NBA star Jamal Mashburn and U.S

Sudan's RSF closes in on Al Obeid as UN warned of imminent atrocities

Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, is advancing toward Al Obeid in the North Kordofan region, which is currently held by the Sudanese army. The city has experienced significant disruptions due to RSF drone strikes targeting both military and civilian infrastructure, including the main power station, leading to power outages, water shortages, and hospital operations being affected. Residents report that life remains mostly normal despite these challenges, though fuel shortages persist after attacks on gas stations. Videos circulating online show RSF fighters claiming they will capture Al Obeid within days. Al Obeid is strategically important as it houses the army's 5th Infantry Division and serves as a major commercial hub. Losing this city would be a significant setback for the army, similar to their previous loss of El Fasher in Darfur, which led to widespread atrocities by the RSF. In response, multiple countries, including Norway, Britain, France, and Germany, have raised concerns at the UN Human Rights Council, warning of potential large-scale atrocities if the RSF escalates its assault on Al Obeid.

In 15 regions of Russia, restrictions on the sale of fuel were introduced for 24 hours

At least 15 regions in Russia implemented fuel sales restrictions on June 23 due to a fuel shortage caused by attacks on oil refining facilities by Ukrainian drones. The restrictions include limiting fuel purchases to specific volumes per person and banning refueling into cans. These measures were introduced in major regions such as Khanty-Mansiysk, Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Tyumen, Novosibirsk, Saratov, Penza, Omsk, Voronezh, Murmansk, and Krasnoyarsk. Authorities cited the need to prevent artificial shortages and excessive demand. In Irkutsk Oblast, some gas stations imposed limits while others stopped operating entirely. Governor Igor Kobzev initially linked the fuel shortage to drone strikes but later removed this statement. In Vladimir Oblast, residents were urged to reduce car travel, and in North Ossetia, authorities ordered the creation of an emergency fuel reserve. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak described the situation as 'not simple but controlled,' attributing regional restrictions to temporary logistical issues. Fuel sales have effectively halted in Crimea after an attack on a logistics hub in the Kerch Strait, with the Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service also禁止

An American gets the maximum amount of recovery time at Wimbledon.

The article discusses the scheduling of the first-round doubles match at Wimbledon involving American tennis player Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams against the Argentine-Colombian pair Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio. The match was initially scheduled for Thursday and Friday but has been postponed due to Serena's injury during her singles match. Tournament organizer Andy Murray (likely a misstatement, as Andy Murray is a British player, and the correct name might be someone like Ashley Barker or another official) stated they are giving Serena as much time as possible to recover. They ruled out postponing the match to later dates unless necessary for safety or tournament flow. The match is expected to take place on a larger court to accommodate the large crowd attracted by Serena and Venus, who are major stars. Serena returned to professional tennis after four years, but she lost her first singles match and injured her knee. She did not attend a press conference afterward due to health reasons and expressed her commitment to participating in the doubles event. Serena and Venus have won six doubles titles together, including a title in 2016.

Ukraine reports two dead after night attacks by Russia, with the death toll in Kiev rising to 30.

At least two people were killed and eight injured in Russian air strikes on the Sumy region and Kryvyj Rih in Ukraine during the night of Thursday to Friday, according to Ukrainian authorities. This follows a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv earlier in the week which killed at least 30 people and injured around 100 others. In response to the attacks, Ukraine conducted missile strikes on Belgorod in Russia, causing a fire at an energy facility and killing one woman, according to Russian media. The overnight strike on the city of Romny in the Sumy region hit a residential building, killing two women and injuring a man, reported regional administrator Oleh Hryhorov via Telegram. Another seven people were injured in a missile strike on Kryvyj Rih, according to military city administrator Oleksandr Vilkul. In Kyiv, teams discovered three more dead bodies during the night, bringing the total number of victims to 30, according to Reuters citing Ukrainian health authorities. Kyiv's military administrator Tymur Tkačenko stated that the attack injured 99 people. Moscow claimed the extensive attack was a response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including those carried

New fraud against the European Medicines Agency: how doctors and pharmacists set up a 'virtual prescription industry', over €400,000 in damages

A new fraud case against the EOPYY (Greek Social Security Organization) has been uncovered by Greek police, revealing a network of doctors and pharmacists who created a fake prescription 'industry' over six years. The scheme involved issuing more than 5,400 false prescriptions, leading to an estimated financial loss of over 405,000 euros for the state. The operation was discovered through coordinated efforts between the police and the EOPYY, resulting in the arrest of the group’s leader and nine other members, including a psychiatrist, a public hospital doctor, and pharmacy owners. The fraudulent activity targeted individuals without active 'free prescription' status, allowing them to avoid receiving notifications about their prescriptions. The fake prescriptions were either reimbursed by the EOPYY or distributed through pharmacies for illegal profit. During raids, authorities seized 240 packages of illegally prescribed medications (some containing narcotics), documents, electronic devices, and cash totaling 1,200 euros. The suspects now face charges including organized crime, fraud, forgery, and violations of data protection laws.

More than 45 degrees expected in New York: East coast of the United States plunges into the furnace, in the middle of the World Cup and for the 250th anniversary celebrations

The eastern coast of the United States is experiencing extreme heatwaves, with temperatures potentially reaching over 45°C in New York and breaking records in other major cities like Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. The National Weather Service has warned that such high temperatures can be life-threatening for those without proper air conditioning or adequate hydration. Authorities have issued alerts as the heatwave coincides with the U.S. Independence Day celebrations and the ongoing FIFA World Cup matches taking place across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Some outdoor events, including a large concert in Washington D.C., have been affected by the weather, with delays reported. People are struggling with the intense heat, which has already broken previous temperature records.

Brad Pitt is seeking access to Angelina Jolie's tax returns amid their dispute over the Chateau Miraval.

Brad Pitt has requested access to Angelina Jolie's tax returns for three years following their divorce, amid ongoing legal disputes over the Château Miraval vineyard. According to legal documents, Pitt claims he has invested significant time and effort into managing the vineyard in France and argues that Jolie violated a previous agreement by attempting to sell her share to Russian billionaire Yuri Shefler. Jolie responded by stating that she did not need Pitt’s approval for the transaction and that his actions were part of an effort to distance herself financially from him. Her legal team clarified that her comments referred specifically to separating her finances from Pitt’s, rather than discussing her overall financial situation. Pitt’s legal team argued that Jolie’s statement effectively made her a target of scrutiny due to the nature of the legal dispute, while Jolie’s team emphasized that the separation from a former spouse is fundamentally different from allegations of general financial hardship. Jolie had previously offered Pitt access to her tax filings for 2020 and 2021.

More than 600,000 displaced people returned to their homes in Lebanon after the ceasefire

More than 600,000 displaced Lebanese have returned to their homes since an uneasy ceasefire was established in late June between Israel and the pro-Iranian Hezbollah. The conflict began after Hezbollah launched attacks against Israel on March 2, citing retaliation for the death of Iran’s top leader in US-Israeli strikes targeting Islamic Republic interests starting February 28. Israel responded with extensive aerial and ground operations, intensifying evacuation orders in southern Lebanon over several months of fighting. According to Lebanese authorities, around 4,300 people were killed and more than a million displaced, primarily in the south and Beirut suburbs. An International Organization for Migration report states that 646,107 individuals have returned home, while approximately 500,000 remain displaced. A protocol signed by Tehran and Washington on June 17 enabled the ceasefire to take effect from June 21, preceding a framework agreement signed between Lebanon and Israel on June 26 aimed at achieving lasting peace. Since then, informal camps in Beirut and surrounding areas have been dismantled, along with a reduction in official shelters. However, the return to many southern,

Greek shipowners are investing nearly $40 billion in the tankers of the future

Greek shipowners are investing nearly $40 billion in new tanker orders by 2026, according to research by Goships Intelligence. This investment represents approximately 60% of global investments by the world’s five largest shipping nations in new tanker orders this year. The study highlights that Greek companies are strategically updating and expanding their fleets, with 141 new tankers ordered, including 44 Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs). These ships are expected to be delivered starting in 2028, reflecting long-term planning for oil transportation needs. Factors driving this strategy include limited shipbuilding capacity, aging global tanker fleets, and international sanctions reducing available vessels. The example of the Dynacom group, which sold 16 older tankers and ordered 36 new ones within six months, illustrates this renewal approach. Greece remains the top country globally in terms of commercial fleet capacity, further strengthening its position in the global oil supply chain.

The article discusses Dimitris Giannakopoulos, the strongman of Panathinaikos Basketball Club, who posted a message on Instagram hinting at the return of Zeljko Obradovic to the team's coaching staff. The post included a sunrise photo from his favorite spot in Sunion, accompanied by the caption 'The sun will come out whether you want it or not.' According to reports, Obradovic has arrived in Athens and is expected to meet with Giannakopoulos over the weekend. Discussions are also ongoing regarding potential assistant coaches, with Vasilis Xanthopoulos and Elias Papatheodorou being considered.
