Ownership

Kathimerini is a Greek daily newspaper of record, founded in 1919 by the antivenizelist journalist Georgios Vlachos and later run by his daughter Helen Vlachos. Since 1988 it has been owned by the Alafouzos shipping family; following Aristides Alafouzos's death in 2017 it passed to his sons, and it forms part of the family's Skai Group (Skai TV, radio and digital), controlled principally by Giannis Alafouzos.

Funding

It is financed by advertising and subscriptions, and is one of the few Greek dailies to operate a digital paywall, backed by the resources of the wider Skai/Alafouzos media group.

Affiliation & stance

Editorially Kathimerini is centre-right and reliably supportive of the governing New Democracy party, yet it is owned by a private shipping family and not by a party or the state. That private commercial ownership supports an INDEPENDENT classification, though its strong pro-government alignment and concentrated owner control place it near the DEPENDENT line; the site's CENTER_RIGHT lean is accurate.

An American gets the maximum amount of recovery time at Wimbledon.

The article discusses the scheduling of the first-round doubles match at Wimbledon involving American tennis player Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams against the Argentine-Colombian pair Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio. The match was initially scheduled for Thursday and Friday but has been postponed due to Serena's injury during her singles match. Tournament organizer Andy Murray (likely a misstatement, as Andy Murray is a British player, and the correct name might be someone like Ashley Barker or another official) stated they are giving Serena as much time as possible to recover. They ruled out postponing the match to later dates unless necessary for safety or tournament flow. The match is expected to take place on a larger court to accommodate the large crowd attracted by Serena and Venus, who are major stars. Serena returned to professional tennis after four years, but she lost her first singles match and injured her knee. She did not attend a press conference afterward due to health reasons and expressed her commitment to participating in the doubles event. Serena and Venus have won six doubles titles together, including a title in 2016.

This follows a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv earlier in the week which killed at least 30 people and injured around 100 others. In response to the attacks, Ukraine conducted missile strikes on Belgorod in Russia, causing a fire at an energy facility and killing one woman, according to Russian media. The overnight strike on the city of Romny in the Sumy region hit a residential building, killing two women and injuring a man, reported regional administrator Oleh Hryhorov via Telegram. Another seven people were injured in a missile strike on Kryvyj Rih, according to military city administrator Oleksandr Vilkul. In Kyiv, teams discovered three more dead bodies during the night, bringing the total number of victims to 30, according to Reuters citing Ukrainian health authorities. Kyiv's military administrator Tymur Tkačenko stated that the attack injured 99 people. Moscow claimed the extensive attack was a response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including those carried

What about the alleged manager's statements?

The Panathinaikos football club has clarified that Facundo Pellistri, the Uruguayan winger, has no intention of leaving the team at this time. This comes after some statements circulating abroad attributed to a supposed manager of Pellistri suggested he might be considering a transfer. However, Panathinaikos denied any communication with this individual and stated they are not part of CAA Stellar, the agency representing Pellistri. The club confirmed that their technical director, Stefanos Kotzolis, has spoken directly with Douglas Manasseh of CAA Stellar, who conveyed that Pellistri is fully committed to Panathinaikos and intends to work hard this season to help both the team and himself. Meanwhile, other reports suggest Pellistri's manager is seeking opportunities for a potential move, but if none materialize, Pellistri will remain with Panathinaikos.

The article discusses the performance of the U.S. national football team at the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, highlighting their ability to balance enthusiasm and pressure. Under coach Mauricio Pochettino, the team has shown cohesion and confidence, starting the tournament with high expectations. They secured victories against Paraguay (4-1) and Australia (2-0), though suffered a defeat to Turkey (2-3). In the Round of 32, they defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina (2-0) despite playing with ten men for much of the match after the red card against Baloghán. It notes the effective use of a broad roster, with multiple players contributing in different matches, and highlights the team’s consistent scoring ability, having scored at least two goals in every group stage game—a historic record for the U.S. National Team. Commission: A new generation of European defence projects Greece in 4 of the 5 programmes

The European Commission has proposed the first five European Defence Projects of Common Interest (EDPCIs), marking a new model of cooperation for developing military capabilities that no single country could achieve alone. These projects aim to strengthen Europe’s defense industry and reduce reliance on non-EU suppliers. Greece participates in four out of the five projects, positioning itself among the countries most involved in this initiative. The projects focus on critical areas such as unmanned systems, maritime security, space capabilities, integrated air defense, and anti-missile protection. The total investment over time is estimated at more than €180 billion, with initial funding already secured. Greece is particularly involved in the Integrated Maritime and Seabed Defence (IMSD) program, which directly impacts its coastal regions, and the SPACE program, aimed at enhancing EU space capabilities.

Greek shipowners are investing nearly $40 billion in the tankers of the future

Greek shipowners are investing nearly $40 billion in new tanker orders by 2026, according to research by Goships Intelligence. This investment represents approximately 60% of global investments by the world’s five largest shipping nations in new tanker orders this year. The study highlights that Greek companies are strategically updating and expanding their fleets, with 141 new tankers ordered, including 44 Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs). These ships are expected to be delivered starting in 2028, reflecting long-term planning for oil transportation needs. Factors driving this strategy include limited shipbuilding capacity, aging global tanker fleets, and international sanctions reducing available vessels. The example of the Dynacom group, which sold 16 older tankers and ordered 36 new ones within six months, illustrates this renewal approach. Greece remains the top country globally in terms of commercial fleet capacity, further strengthening its position in the global oil supply chain.

NBA: The Power of Players and Muay Thai by Jalen Brown

The article discusses the growing influence of individual players in the NBA, highlighting recent trades involving Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown. It notes how teams now prioritize star players' preferences, leading to frequent player movements and reshaping the league into a 'players' league.' The piece explores both perspectives on this trend—some view it as empowering athletes, while others argue it undermines team cohesion and stability. Examples include LeBron James forming a super team in Miami and other stars like Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard demanding trades. The article questions whether this shift benefits the league or creates instability.

The sun will come out whether you like it or not, watch the video

The article discusses Dimitris Giannakopoulos, the strongman of Panathinaikos Basketball Club, who posted a message on Instagram hinting at the return of Zeljko Obradovic to the team's coaching staff. The post included a sunrise photo from his favorite spot in Sunion, accompanied by the caption 'The sun will come out whether you want it or not.' According to reports, Obradovic has arrived in Athens and is expected to meet with Giannakopoulos over the weekend. Obradovic is reportedly close to returning to the head coaching position, though he proposed Zoran Savic for the general manager role, which was rejected due to Savic's past with PAOK. Discussions are also ongoing regarding potential assistant coaches, with Vasilis Xanthopoulos and Elias Papatheodorou being considered.

In the tropical Pacific, El Niño conditions have set in, researchers say.

The article reports that researchers from New Zealand’s Earth Sciences organization (ESNZ) have identified conditions consistent with the El Niño climate phenomenon in the tropical Pacific. They warn that impacts on New Zealand’s weather are likely to intensify over the coming months. The ESNZ joined other organizations in Australia, Japan, and the U.S. in confirming the development of El Niño, which is expected to reach strong intensity between July and September. The effects are projected to peak during the Southern Hemisphere summer, spanning late 2023 into early 2024. According to lead researcher Chris Brandolini, this El Niño event is at least comparable in strength to five of the strongest recorded El Niños in modern history. The article outlines regional rainfall expectations, noting potential below-average precipitation in some areas and above-normal levels in others. It also mentions possible temperature fluctuations and increased wind variability later in the year. Additionally, it notes two lower-probability risks: sudden stratospheric warming and the occurrence of a tropical cyclone outside the typical season, both historically linked to El Niño. Πρωτοβουλία στο Κογκρέσο για μπλόκο στην πώληση μαχητικών F-35 στην Τουρκία

A Democratic congresswoman from Nevada, Dina Titus, has initiated a proposal in Congress to block Turkey's potential reintegration into the F-35 fighter jet program. This follows President Donald Trump's comments suggesting openness to new defense arrangements with Ankara ahead of the NATO Summit in Turkey. The letter outlines efforts by lawmakers to invoke their authority under the Arms Export Control Act to prevent any decision allowing Turkey back into the F-35 program unless issues related to Russia's S-400 air defense system and U.S. sanctions (CAATSA) are resolved. The proposed action would involve a joint resolution of disapproval, a formal legislative tool available after the administration formally notifies Congress of a planned sale. The letter is being sent to both the Republican leader in the House, Steve Scalise, and the Democratic minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries. It notes that the Trump administration cannot bypass legal obligations while Turkey retains the Russian S-400 system. This move comes amid Trump’s remarks during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutledge, where he confirmed plans to visit Turkey with a 'big bag of gifts' referencing Turkey's demand

According to the mother's report, he entered the apartment while she was absent, threatened the children, struck the 8-year-old in the face, and then pressed a pillow against the child's face, putting his life at risk. Turkey: Comedian Deniz Goktas detained for insulting Erdogan and Islam

A Turkish court has decided to detain comedian Deniz Göktaş pending trial, accused of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and religious values, according to a report by Reuters. Göktaş was arrested at Istanbul Airport upon his return from a trip abroad. The prosecution claims he received 185 complaints related to his stand-up performances and launched an investigation into 'public insult of Turkey’s religious values.' The investigation focuses on a June 1 performance where he made references to Erdoğan, the Quran, and Imamoglu. His lawyer stated that insulting the president is among the charges against him. Members of Erdoğan’s governing AKP party and presidential advisors criticized Göktaş, accusing him of mocking Erdoğan and the Quran. In a statement to police, Göktaş denied the allegations, stating his jokes do not constitute insults to religious values or the Quran. He described his reference to Erdoğan as a political term rather than an insult. After rumors suggested he had fled the country to avoid prosecution, Göktaş clarified in a social media post that he traveled abroad for vacation and intended to return. Born in Ankara, Göktaş began his career in stand-up comedy in
