The search for survivors enters critical hours in Venezuela, where there are already more than 1,000 dead

A critical search for survivors continues in Venezuela four days after two powerful earthquakes killed at least 1,450 people. President Delcy Rodríguez, who has been acting president since January, urged ongoing rescue efforts and announced plans to assist those displaced by the collapses. Rescue teams, both national and international, are working primarily in La Guaira, where the most severe damage occurred. The death toll includes 17 Spanish nationals, 7 Portuguese, 46 Lusophone descendants, and 3 Chileans. Over 3,150 people were reported injured, though this number was slightly lower than previously stated without explanation. At least 33 survivors have been rescued. The government also announced the creation of a commission to assess infrastructure damage using traffic light color codes to determine habitability. Public transportation services in several cities have resumed. Rodríguez extended school closures and announced the formation of a task force to establish temporary shelters and expedite housing projects.

Putin recognizes the oil map for the first time

Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged for the first time that Russia is building 'some oil reserves' during a meeting focused on energy issues. He emphasized the need to strengthen domestic oil production and increase output. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continued their attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, detonating an oil purification plant in the southern Krasnodar region, which produces around four million tons of crude oil annually. The Krasnodar region is one of Russia's largest oil-producing areas located near the Black Sea. On Tuesday, Ukrainian forces launched large-scale air strikes on Sevastopol, the largest city on Crimea, including attacks on oil facilities. In response, Russia, which annexed Crimea in 2014, has restricted fuel sales to the public to counteract the energy shortages. According to reports, these attacks have had no impact on the front line. During an interview with a Russian state television station, Putin described the Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure as an attempt to destabilize Russian society. He stated that Ukraine's goal was to halt the deployment of Russian military units to improve their position in arms control talks.

¿Quiénes han solicitado la regularización? Sus datos por nacionalidad, edad y sexo

The deadline for applying for extraordinary regularization of immigrants in Spain ended on June 30. According to initial data from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, 11,000 people have been regularized out of 1.174.968 applications submitted, with half of the cases (609,737) already being processed. Nearly seven out of ten applicants (787,235) come from Central and South America, followed by 269,070 from Africa. Colombia leads in terms of nationality with 26% of the applications, ahead of Morocco (13.3%) and Venezuela (11.8%). Almost 80% of the requests come from undocumented migrants living and working in Spain, while 20% are from war-torn countries or other situations threatening their lives who opted for this regularization process instead of international protection. The number of applications varies significantly by province, with Madrid receiving the most (202,424), followed by Barcelona (192,195) and Valencia (74,951). Provinces in Castile and León have the fewest applications, such as Palencia (2,075), Soria (2,069), and Zamora (1,950). Men make up the majority of applicants (669,737) compared to women (505,241), and most are young, with 81% under 45.

The Tax Agency informs judge Calama that inspects the declarations of Zapatero and his family from 2021 to 2024

The Spanish Tax Agency has informed Judge José Luis Calama of ongoing tax inspections into former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, his wife Sonsoles Espinosa, their daughters Alba and Laura Rodríguez, and their friend Julio Martínez Martínez. The inspections cover various taxes including income tax (IRPF), value-added tax (IVA), wealth tax, and solidarity tax for large fortunes, spanning periods from 2021 to 2024. The agency notes that these inspections could overlap with a pending criminal investigation, and therefore recommends suspending them to avoid duplication. However, this decision lies with the judge. The Tax Agency emphasizes that the outcomes of these inspections might depend on findings from the judicial inquiry.

The prosecutor concludes that Kitchen had "a bastard purpose": "boycott" the case of the B box and "protect" leaders of the PP

The Spanish anti-corruption prosecutor, César de Rivas, has concluded that the 'Kitchen' investigation involved a 'bastard purpose' aimed at 'boycotting' the case against the Popular Party (PP)'s 'box B' and 'protecting' its leaders. The prosecution alleges that police commanders conducted surveillance on the Bárcenas family and stole documents to obstruct the investigation. De Rivas claims that former Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz directed the operation, based on messages sent to his deputy Francisco Martínez, who formalized the plan before a notary. The same phone number used by Martinez was linked to the Ministry of Interior in 2013 and later to the ex-minister in 2019. The prosecutor dismissed the defense argument that Kitchen was an intelligence operation, noting that funds hidden by Bárcenas had already surfaced in Switzerland and that the surveillance and device theft did not align with such an operation. De Rivas emphasized the lack of communication between the accused and judicial authorities like the UDEF, which hindered their ability to contribute to solving the case. He also highlighted the testimony of Inspector Gonzalo Fraga, who supported the authenticity of

The Andalusian pact: Vox will have a vice presidency in the government of Juanma Moreno, which will be occupied by Manuel Gavira

Juanma Moreno has been elected president of the Andalusian regional government (Junta) with the support of his 53 PP deputies and 15 Vox members, marking the largest backing for any president in Andalusia's history. As part of a coalition agreement, Vox will hold a vice presidency under the new government, with its parliamentary spokesperson, Manuel Gavira, appointed as vice president overseeing the departments of Tourism, Deregulation, Justice, and Local Administration. The deal includes Vox securing a vice presidency in the regional parliament and one of the autonomous-designated senator positions. The agreement, signed by Moreno and Gavira, aims to ensure stability for the next four years and includes approval of four budgets and 150 measures across various sectors. Despite emphasizing differences between the PP and Vox, both parties prioritized common goals, with Moreno highlighting that this is a legislative agreement rather than just an investment pact. The negotiation was tense and time-sensitive, culminating after failed attempts at forming a government earlier in the week.

Feijóo accuses Sánchez of "electoral engineering" for the 'Law of grandchildren': "Increases the census by 2.5 million voters"

The article reports on comments made by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of Spain's People's Party (PP), regarding Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's reaction to a vote in Congress where most members asked him to resign or face a confidence vote. Feijóo criticizes Sánchez's laughter after the vote as indicative of the PSOE's decline and suggests that the party is resorting to 'electoral engineering' through the 'Law of Grandchildren,' which allows descendants of Spanish citizens who suffered during the Spanish Civil War to gain citizenship and voting rights. He claims this law could increase the voter roll by 2.5 million people, arguing it is an attempt to manipulate election outcomes. Feijóo also criticizes the regularization of immigrants and mentions concerns over potential violations of European rights. Additionally, he addresses the legal situation of former President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, suggesting his actions have damaged Spain's international reputation.

The heat wave reveals a France more prepared to prohibit than to prevent

France experienced an extreme heatwave in June 2025, leading to an estimated 1,000 additional deaths compared to usual levels. The National Public Health Agency (SPF) reported this excess mortality, primarily concentrated in regions under red alerts. Critics have pointed out the government’s lack of preparedness, both in addressing climate change and adapting infrastructure to handle such crises. Officials like President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu defended their management, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the heatwave. However, experts like Dr. François Bourdillon criticized the reactive approach, noting failures to learn from past heatwaves, including inadequate hospital air conditioning and insufficient preventive measures. On June 26, Lecornu approved plans to provide 30,000 air conditioners for hospitals, but critics argue these actions come too late and fail to address systemic issues. Some professionals accuse the government of shifting blame onto individuals through restrictive policies, such as banning alcohol consumption in public spaces, rather than tackling structural challenges.

Inteligencia artificial: cuando ser aliado no basta

The article discusses the U.S. decision to restrict access to two AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, by Anthropic under the Trump administration. This marks a shift in U.S. export controls from hardware to AI software. The move has implications for European technological sovereignty, highlighting both commercial dependency on American cloud services and the fragility of international alliances. While Fable 5 represents a market-based risk, Mythos 5 illustrates how even trusted allies can lose access to critical technology without notice, undermining strategic partnerships.

Por qué ha sido un éxito la mayor regularización de nuestra historia

The article discusses the success of Spain’s largest regularization process for undocumented migrants, highlighting the challenges of estimating irregular immigration due to lack of registration. It references an economic model developed by Ismael Gálvez-Iniesta to calculate irregular migration, revealing that most undocumented individuals come from Central and South America rather than Africa, contrary to media focus. The author outlines five main arguments supporting the regularization: the large number of people living and working in Spain, ethical concerns over access to essential services, collective interest in increasing tax revenue and sustaining pensions, pandemic-related health risks, and the historical precedent of regularization under various governments. The article cites a 2025 More in Common survey showing broad public support for migration, which contributed to the successful implementation of the regularization.

Refugios climáticos y otras derivas culturales

The article discusses the emergence of 'climatic shelters' in cultural institutions across Spain, such as the Museo Reina Sofía and the CA2M, which are offering cooled spaces to visitors during extreme heat. These initiatives aim to provide relief from the rising temperatures while promoting cultural engagement through exhibitions and performances. The author notes that similar measures have been adopted by other institutions like the Círculo de Bellas Artes and museums in Barcelona, which are part of broader municipal plans. However, the writer expresses concern that this trend reflects a broader shift toward treating culture as a form of leisure rather than addressing deeper societal issues.

The opposition to Ayuso tries for the third time to create a commission of inquiry on the non-payments of Madrid Network

The article discusses ongoing efforts by opposition parties in the Madrid regional government to investigate Madrid Network, an association backed by former leader Esperanza Aguirre, which received a large public loan that has led to over 70 million euros in unpaid debts. The current government under Isabel Díaz Ayuso has been blocking transparency regarding the organization, prompting the PSOE to submit a third proposal this year for a parliamentary investigation. Previous attempts by both the PSOE and Más Madrid were blocked by the ruling PP majority. Madrid Network was initially considered a private entity until September 2025 when it announced it was leaving the region, and it never registered as of public interest despite managing significant public funds. The article highlights connections between Madrid Network’s funding recipients and former high-ranking officials, including those linked to past governments, while noting that no formal investigations have yet been launched.

CNN: Why the future of oil prices will depend on China

The future of global oil prices may depend heavily on China, which has taken several measures to protect its economy from the effects of the conflict in Iran, which has restricted access to over 11 million barrels of oil per day. Through reducing imports, utilizing strategic reserves, and promoting clean energy, Beijing has absorbed much of the pressure from high prices, contributing to stabilizing the global market. Analysts estimate that China acts as an 'invisible regulatory force' in the oil market, with its ability to reduce imports by up to 3 million barrels daily—nearly equal to Japan’s total demand—helping prevent price spikes despite reduced supply due to the conflict. The Chinese government has created reserves exceeding 1 billion barrels and limited exports of refined products like gasoline and diesel to ensure domestic sufficiency and reduce international demand. Additionally, rapid development of electric vehicles has decreased oil consumption by approximately 1 million barrels per day. However, the International Energy Agency warns that potential re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz could lead to oversupply next year, potentially leading to replenishment or even growth
