Ownership
Diario de Noticias is a historic Lisbon daily first published on 29 December 1864 by Tomas Quintino Antunes and Eduardo Coelho. It is now owned by Global Media Group (formerly Controlinveste Media, founded by sports-rights mogul Joaquim Oliveira), which also publishes Jornal de Noticias and runs radio station TSF. Ownership has been unstable: in July 2023 the Swiss-headquartered World Opportunity Fund (WOF) acquired a controlling interest in Paginas Civilizadas, the holding that controls a majority of Global Media Group, triggering an investor dispute and a major restructuring.
Funding
Financed commercially through advertising, sales and digital subscriptions; the group has faced well-publicised financial difficulties and restructuring, including job cuts and a shift of DN toward a digital/weekly print model.
Affiliation & stance
Diario de Noticias is privately owned via the Global Media Group holding chain, with no party or state shareholder; its editorial line is broadly centrist. Despite ownership turbulence and an opaque investor (WOF), control remains with private commercial owners rather than a party or government, so it is classified INDEPENDENT.

Diesel price up 30% and gasoline up 19% in May compared to 2025 says DGEG
According to the Rapid Statistics on Fossil Fuels published by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG), the average retail price of road diesel reached €1.977 per liter in May, up 30% compared to May 2025, though down slightly from April’s €2.038. The average price of gasoline 95 rose to €2.000 per liter, a 19% increase over May 2025 but up only 4.2% from April. Prices for other fuels showed mixed trends, with a 3.3% drop in LPG and a 4.2% rise in gasoline. Excluding taxes, diesel prices increased by 55.9% and gasoline by 40.5% year-on-year. The report notes that the average monthly price of Brent crude oil rose from €57.15 in May 2025 to €91.59 in May 2026. Overall fuel consumption grew by 1.6% year-on-year, with significant increases in LPG, gasoline 98, and gasoline 95 usage. Meanwhile, the average import price of natural gas fell 9.3% year-on-year to around €23 per megawatt-hour, with 98% of imports being liquefied natural gas transported by ship. Rising fuel prices have been driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran in late February, and concerns over potential disruptions to international oil supplies linkedto
Nuno Melo wants the U.S. to take responsibility for the contamination at Lajes Base
The Portuguese Minister of Defense, Nuno Melo, has called on the United States to take responsibility for environmental contamination at the Lajes Air Base in the Azores, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring by the Portuguese state. He stated that while there is clear evidence of contamination linked to the base’s operations since 2003, the focus should remain on official entities like the LNEC and the regional water authority, which are legally responsible for addressing such issues. Melo dismissed concerns raised by local anthropologist Félix Rodrigues, calling his study 'private' and not directly relevant to official decision-making. The Expresso newspaper reports that the U.S. has not conducted environmental remediation work in the area between 2020 and 2022, citing the belief that contamination does not pose health risks. In 2025, U.S. military authorities threatened to halt further mitigation efforts unless more information was provided.

Sudan's RSF closes in on Al Obeid as UN warned of imminent atrocities
Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, is advancing toward Al Obeid in the North Kordofan region, which is currently held by the Sudanese army. The city has experienced significant disruptions due to RSF drone strikes targeting both military and civilian infrastructure, including the main power station, leading to power outages, water shortages, and hospital operations being affected. Residents report that life remains mostly normal despite these challenges, though fuel shortages persist after attacks on gas stations. Videos circulating online show RSF fighters claiming they will capture Al Obeid within days. Al Obeid is strategically important as it houses the army's 5th Infantry Division and serves as a major commercial hub. Losing this city would be a significant setback for the army, similar to their previous loss of El Fasher in Darfur, which led to widespread atrocities by the RSF. In response, multiple countries, including Norway, Britain, France, and Germany, have raised concerns at the UN Human Rights Council, warning of potential large-scale atrocities if the RSF escalates its assault on Al Obeid.

Ukraine reports two dead after night attacks by Russia, with the death toll in Kiev rising to 30.
At least two people were killed and eight injured in Russian air strikes on the Sumy region and Kryvyj Rih in Ukraine during the night of Thursday to Friday, according to Ukrainian authorities. This follows a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv earlier in the week which killed at least 30 people and injured around 100 others. In response to the attacks, Ukraine conducted missile strikes on Belgorod in Russia, causing a fire at an energy facility and killing one woman, according to Russian media. The overnight strike on the city of Romny in the Sumy region hit a residential building, killing two women and injuring a man, reported regional administrator Oleh Hryhorov via Telegram. Another seven people were injured in a missile strike on Kryvyj Rih, according to military city administrator Oleksandr Vilkul. In Kyiv, teams discovered three more dead bodies during the night, bringing the total number of victims to 30, according to Reuters citing Ukrainian health authorities. Kyiv's military administrator Tymur Tkačenko stated that the attack injured 99 people. Moscow claimed the extensive attack was a response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including those carried

Parks closed, Portugal on alert for heat wave and risk of forest fires
Portugal has entered an alert state due to a severe heatwave and increased risk of forest fires, which lasts until Monday, July 6. Authorities are concerned about prolonged high temperatures, particularly affecting coastal regions where temperatures have reached around 40 degrees Celsius over several days. To mitigate risks, some urban parks containing forested areas, such as Quinta das Conchas in Lisbon, have been closed. Preventive measures include restrictions on open fires and machinery that could spark fires. Emergency services, security forces, and technology like drones are being used to monitor and prevent potential fire outbreaks. Officials emphasize the importance of public awareness and cooperation to avoid tragedies similar to past summer incidents.

In the tropical Pacific, El Niño conditions have set in, researchers say.
The article reports that researchers from New Zealand’s Earth Sciences organization (ESNZ) have identified conditions consistent with the El Niño climate phenomenon in the tropical Pacific. They warn that impacts on New Zealand’s weather are likely to intensify over the coming months. The ESNZ joined other organizations in Australia, Japan, and the U.S. in confirming the development of El Niño, which is expected to reach strong intensity between July and September. The effects are projected to peak during the Southern Hemisphere summer, spanning late 2023 into early 2024. According to lead researcher Chris Brandolini, this El Niño event is at least comparable in strength to five of the strongest recorded El Niños in modern history. The article outlines regional rainfall expectations, noting potential below-average precipitation in some areas and above-normal levels in others. It also mentions possible temperature fluctuations and increased wind variability later in the year. Additionally, it notes two lower-probability risks: sudden stratospheric warming and the occurrence of a tropical cyclone outside the typical season, both historically linked to El Niño. Brandolini connects the

Tennis Center was a luxury addition to the National Stadium.
In June 1945, one year after the inauguration of the Estádio Nacional on June 10, the Jamor sports complex received an important addition with the opening of the Tennis Center. The architectural design was led by Miguel Jacobetty Rosa, who had previously been responsible for the stadium and other infrastructure. To commemorate this date, the Portuguese Tennis Federation organized its first tournament at the site, inviting internationally renowned players who delivered 'three brilliant matches' remembered by those present. Today, the Jamor has 35 tennis courts, six of which are covered, and serves as the headquarters for high-performance tennis training.

Venezuela: Survivor still trapped in rubble eight days after earthquakes
Hernan Gil, a 43-year-old security guard, has been trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building in Catia La Mar, a coastal area in the state of La Guaira, Venezuela, since the earthquake on June 24. He was detected alive by a Portuguese rescue team and has remained trapped for eight days. Rescue teams from seven countries—Portugal, Venezuela, Chile, the United States, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Mexico—have worked tirelessly for three days to reach him, changing strategies this morning to approach him from another location. His wife described the situation as a 'true miracle' and expressed amazement at the international cooperation involved. The region has suffered extensive damage, with many buildings destroyed and marked with the letter 'D,' indicating fatalities. The interim president of Venezuela declared seven days of national mourning. Official reports indicate over 2,295 deaths, more than 11,000 injured, and 50,000 missing. Among the victims were 75 Portuguese citizens and descendants, with 66 still missing. The Venezuelan government restricted access to the affected area, requiring volunteers to carry permits. International organizations estimate 50,000 people remain失踪

Duarte Lima's case to be heard on July 13 to try to reach consensus on missing evidence
The article discusses the legal proceedings against former Portuguese politician Duarte Lima, who was accused of murdering Rosalina Ribeiro in Brazil in 2009. The case has been delayed multiple times due to missing evidence, specifically digital recordings that were never sent to Portugal. On July 13, 2026, a court session is scheduled to attempt to reach a consensus regarding the missing evidence and possibly restore the case file. The Portuguese judiciary has repeatedly requested the Brazilian authorities to send the missing documentation, which includes audio recordings. In November 2025, Judge Carlos Camacho acknowledged the inability of Brazilian judicial authorities to fully transmit the case files and decided to proceed with the trial. The defense argues that the lack of complete evidence could compromise the fairness of the trial. The prosecution claims that Duarte Lima received funds from Rosalina Ribeiro, allegedly related to an inheritance, and that he killed her after she refused to sign a declaration affirming ownership of the money.
Carneiro challenges the government to make a "reversal" and accuses it of "ideological maneuvers" with Chega

Flight bookings to the East are down 30% from last year.
Air travel reservations to the Middle East during summer months are gradually recovering despite ongoing regional conflicts, though they remain 30% below the same period last year, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). In May, ticket sales improved compared to March, which saw a 63% drop due to escalating conflict, and April, which had a 44% decline. IATA predicts a slow recovery in air traffic if geopolitical conditions stabilize, highlighting the region’s significance in the global aviation network. Meanwhile, Europe experienced a 9% decrease in May, while North America, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific maintained similar levels to 2025 but showed declines compared to March 2026. The organization attributes some of the slowdown in these regions to rising fuel and ticket prices, though it notes the global network’s ability to adapt, citing the Asia-Pacific region’s significant increase in bookings amid the Middle East crisis.
