The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has called on its affiliated unions and workers nationwide to brace themselves for a fierce fight over the proposed increase in the national minimum wage, warning that the current rate of N70,000 is insufficient to cover basic living expenses. In a speech delivered at the opening of the 2026 NLC Rain School in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized that the existing wage level has become a “poverty wage,” unable to address the rising cost of living. He announced that organized labor is ready to initiate negotiations for a more substantial living wage, stressing that the union would not enter these discussions in a weakened position. Ajaero addressed a gathering of labor leaders, political figures, and gender advocates during the annual event, which focused on the theme “The Working Class and the Politics of 2027: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities.” He urged attendees to remain vigilant and prepared for the upcoming wage negotiations, highlighting the urgent need for a wage that allows workers to support their families with dignity. According to his remarks, the current minimum wage fails to provide even the most basic necessities such as food, shelter, and education. He described the situation as one of systemic exploitation, noting that Nigeria ranks among the top ten countries globally for labor rights violations. The NLC leader criticized the government for delaying the passage of modern labor laws, which were reviewed by a tripartite committee involving representatives from labor, management, and government. He accused the administration of using the delay as a tactic to maintain the current status quo of inequality and exploitation. Ajaero argued that progressive labor legislation is essential for safeguarding workers' rights and bringing Nigeria in line with international labor standards. He called on members of the National Assembly, civil society groups, and the media to support the push for these reforms. In addition to advocating for better wages, the NLC highlighted broader concerns about the political landscape in Nigeria. Ajaero noted that the upcoming 2027 elections represent a critical moment for the country’s future, emphasizing that the struggle for workers’ rights extends beyond electoral politics. He stressed the importance of building a democratic and welfare-oriented alternative that prioritizes the well-being of citizens over corporate interests. He pointed out that despite the nation's economic output, persistent issues such as illicit financial flows and corruption continue to undermine the livelihoods of ordinary workers. Ajaero also drew attention to recent developments regarding public spending, including the emergence of a controversial agency with a budget exceeding one billion naira. While questions have been raised about the legitimacy of this funding, no satisfactory answers have been provided. He reiterated the NLC’s stance that the country’s economic challenges stem from systemic corruption and mismanagement, which drain public resources and deprive workers of fair compensation. As preparations for the upcoming wage negotiations intensify, the NLC is expected to mobilize its vast network of affiliated unions and grassroots organizations to exert pressure on the federal government.
