Het ziekenhuis AZ Jan Palfijn aan de Watersportbaan in Gent heeft een nieuw Sportmedisch Centrum geopend voor sporters, niet alleen voor topatleten, maar ook voor gewone sporters. Die kunnen zich in het nieuwe sportmedisch centrum laten begeleiden, om bijvoorbeeld hun prestaties te verbeteren of gezond te sporten. In het centrum werken verschillende artsen samen, naast sportartsen onder meer ook cardiologen, orthopedisten en pediaters.

Het Sportmedisch Centrum richt zich op inspanningstesten, sportmedische onderzoeken, diagnostiek, revalidatie en begeleiding bij het hervatten van sportactiviteiten — voor zowel topsporters als recreatieve sporters.

"We willen echt proberen te zoeken naar nieuwe technologieën die op de markt komen, maar wel met een wetenschappelijke validatie", zegt fysioloog Sören Sanders, die het Sportmedisch Centrum zal coördineren.

Zo is er een Cortex C21-gasanalysetoestel. Volgens het ziekenhuis gaat het om het eerste toestel van die soort in ons land.

Het systeem meet tijdens de sportinspanning de zuurstofopname en tientallen andere fysiologische parameters. Op basis van die gegevens kunnen sporters en hun begeleiders een beter beeld krijgen van hun conditie en inspanningscapaciteit.

Het toestel is ook mobiel inzetbaar, zodat metingen niet alleen in het ziekenhuis, maar ook op een atletiekpiste of andere sportlocaties mogelijk zijn.

De ligging aan de Watersportlaan in Gent is ideaal, zo klinkt het in het AZ Jan Palfijn.
