Jakarta (ANTARA) - German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier described Indonesia as an important pillar of stability within the ASEAN region and praised its active role in shaping Southeast Asia’s security architecture.

Speaking during his visit to the Merdeka Palace on Monday, Steinmeier said that Europe closely follows developments in the Indo-Pacific and recognizes ASEAN’s crucial role in strengthening regional security.

Steinmeier noted that Indonesia serves as a key stabilizing force within ASEAN.

According to him, Indonesia has consistently expanded its influence and contributions at the regional level, particularly in promoting peace and maintaining stability across Southeast Asia.

Steinmeier emphasized that cooperation between Indonesia and Germany extends beyond political and security affairs to encompass a wide range of sectors, including environmental protection.

He also highlighted Indonesia’s positive contribution to maintaining balance in the Indo-Pacific region. He stressed that regional stability is a fundamental prerequisite for economic growth and stronger trade relations.

The German government expressed hope that the regional stability continuously maintained by Indonesia will open new investment opportunities and strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

Steinmeier explained that strengthening the regional security architecture will also support interactions and cooperation among business actors from Indonesia and Germany.

This commitment to maintaining regional stability, he added, will continue to be part of the ongoing discussions between the Indonesian and German governments.

As the initiator of the Bangkok Declaration of 1967, Indonesia plays a mediator role in conflicts in the Southeast Asia region.

Indonesia is also the location of the ASEAN Permanent Secretariat, serving as the administrative center for diplomacy among member states.

Indonesia also initiated the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community for free market integration, and has driven cooperation in the education sector as well as promoted the enforcement of human rights through the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission.
