Waze sends updates about matches, asking users to disable them

Users of the navigation app Waze have been receiving live notifications during the World Cup football matches, including alerts for goals and match outcomes. Wie met de navigatie-app Waze rijdt, krijgt tijdens het WK voetbal live meldingen over de wedstrijden. De app stuurt onder meer notificaties bij de aftrap, doelpunten en het eindsignaal. "De meldingen veroorzaken extra afleiding", klinkt de kritiek van verkeersveiligheidsexperts en de Belgische Waze-community.

"Volg het WK met live-alerts voor elke aftrap, goal en uitslag." Die boodschap kregen Waze-gebruikers de afgelopen week wanneer ze de app openden. De meldingen staan standaard ingeschakeld, al kunnen gebruikers ze zelf uitschakelen.

Volgens de Vlaamse Stichting Verkeerskunde (VSV) leiden zulke meldingen tot extra afleiding achter het stuur, reageerde ze bij Het Nieuwsblad.

Ook binnen de Waze-community zelf worden vragen gesteld bij de functie. In die community zitten vrijwilligers die meewerken aan de app en kaarten up-to-date houden.

Vraag om meldingen uit te schakelen

"We hebben toch onze vraagtekens bij deze functie", reageert Waze-vrijwilliger Stefaan Schroeyers in De Ochtend op Radio 1. "Daarom hebben we gevraagd om die meldingen voor België en bij uitbreiding de Benelux uit te schakelen."

Die vraag werd volgens hem afgelopen weekend besproken tijdens een overleg tussen vertegenwoordigers van de Waze-community en medewerkers van het bedrijf in Rotterdam. "We hebben daar geen 100 procent vat op, maar meestal wordt er wel snel gereageerd op zulke signalen."
