GOTOVO svi putnici i članovi posade kruzera MV Hondius, koji su zbog smrtonosne epidemije hantavirusa bili u karanteni u Nizozemskoj, sada se mogu vratiti kućama, priopćio je čelnik Svjetske zdravstvene organizacije (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus na platformi X.
Na brodu je potvrđeno 12 slučajeva zaraze i još jedan potencijalni slučaj, uz tri smrtna ishoda, zbog čega su reagirale međunarodne zdravstvene službe.
Nizozemski brod isplovio je 1. travnja iz Ushuaije u Argentini, ploveći prema udaljenim otocima u južnom Atlantiku, prije nego što je krenuo prema sjeveru, u smjeru Zelenortske Republike i španjolskih Kanarskih otoka, gdje su preostali putnici evakuirani.
Brod je 18. svibnja pristao u luci Rotterdam, najvećoj europskoj luci, a preostala posada potom je tjednima bila u karanteni.
Stabilna situacija
Čelnik WHO-a napomenuo je da je situacija stabilna, jer od 2. svibnja nije zabilježen nijedan novi slučaj ni smrtni ishod.

Brod je 30. svibnja dobio odobrenje za nastavak plovidbe nakon čišćenja i dezinfekcije, dok je otok Sveta Helena, gdje se iskrcao dio putnika, 8. lipnja proglasio završetak izvanredne situacije.
Vlasti tog udaljenog britanskog otoka priopćile su da su sve osobe koje su morale biti izolirane uspješno završile 42-dnevnu karantenu te da više nema aktivnih, sumnjivih ni potvrđenih slučajeva zaraze.
Hantavirus se prenosi glodavcima, a za njega ne postoje cjepivo ni specifična terapija. Soj iz skupine Andes, utvrđen u slučaju na kruzeru, jedini je poznati soj hantavirusa koji se može prenositi s čovjeka na čovjeka.
