EU leaders have extended anti-Russian sanctions for 12 months, a spokeswoman for Costa said.

EU leaders have agreed to extend Russia-related sanctions by 12 months during a summit in Brussels. The extension applies to sectoral sanctions targeting various parts of the Russian economy, including finance, transport, energy, industrial goods, and defense products. The decision requires unanimous approval from all 27 EU member states and must still be formally approved by the European Council. Previously, sanctions were extended every six months, with some countries like Slovakia and Hungary opposing longer extensions.

Prodlužování těchto postihů dosud probíhalo každých šest měsíců a v minulosti se často proti tomuto kroku stavěly zejména Slovensko či Maďarsko. Budapešť rovněž odmítala prodloužení sankcí o delší dobu, tedy o 12 měsíců, jak navrhovaly ostatní státy. Situace se nyní změnila s novým premiérem Péterem Magyarem.
