The board awaits clarification from the Higher Education Department regarding the filling of 1,292 additional posts, which were cleared by the Madras High Court. The mark list will be followed by certificate verification and interviews, with at least three candidates interviewed per position

The recruitment exam to fill the assistant professor posts was held in December 2025.

The Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Recruitment Board (TRB) aims to release the mark list for the recruitment exam held in December 2025 to fill 2,708 positions of assistant professors in government arts and science colleges in the last week of June.

The Board is now awaiting clarification from the Higher Education Department on whether it can proceed with filling 1,292 additional assistant professor posts after the Madras High Court cleared the decks for it last month.

The evaluation of descriptive answers and the process of awarding weightage to experienced candidates have been completed, sources at the TRB said. The candidates have been given two marks for every year of experience, not exceeding 15 marks, as per directions of the court. The mark list will be released in the last week of June and the schedule for certificate verification will be announced around the same time, following which the interview schedule will be published. For every post, at least three eligible candidates would be interviewed, they added.

The recruitment process through open competition ran into rough weather after guest lecturers working in government colleges and universities went to court seeking regularisation of their services after the TRB issued a notification for recruitment exam in 2024 based on a 2022 Government Order (G.O.). A Single Judge Bench of the Madras High Court allowed the petitions directing the government to consider their regularisation.

In October 2025, the Higher Education Department issued a G.O. directing the TRB to cancel the 2024 notification and issue a fresh one to fill 2,708 posts, excluding 1,292 posts that were caught up in litigation. The exam was held in December 2025. The State government, meanwhile, filed an appeal stating that 7,000 posts of assistant professors were vacant in government arts and science colleges and government colleges of education, and 42,064 qualified candidates had applied for these posts. A Division Bench of the Madras High Court set aside the Single Judge order last month and asked the government to give appropriate directions to the TRB to notify an additional 1,292 posts for recruitment.
