Eftir að hafa farið bakdyraleið inn á HM og komist þangað með herkjum þá hófu Svíar mótið með miklum glæsibrag í nótt þegar þeir unnu 5-1 sigur á Túnis í F-riðli. Fílabeinsströndin vann dísætan 1-0 sigur gegn Ekvador í E-riðli.
Stjörnuframherjarnir úr ensku úrvalsdeildinni, Alexander Isak og Viktor Gyökeres, byrjuðu leikinn saman í fremstu víglínu Svía og fóru á kostum í leiknum. Það gerði einnig Yasin Ayari, hinn 22 ára miðjumaður Brighton, sem kom Svíum yfir strax á sjöundu mínútu með þrumuskoti.

Seint í uppbótartíma skoraði svo Ayari sitt annað mark með góðu skoti og Svíar hefja því HM af miklum krafti. Þeir eru efstir í F-riðli eftir að Japan og Holland gerðu 2-2 jafntefli í fyrsta leik riðilsins.

Fjörið var öllu minna í E-riðlinum hjá Fílabeinsströndinni og hinu sterka varnarliði Ekvadora.
