For Simona Niculescu, that morning initially seemed perfectly ordinary. Everything changed, however, when she switched on the television after receiving a public emergency alert warning residents of a potential danger in the area of the Port of Constanta, the Black Sea city where she lives.
Completely unexpectedly, the 51-year-old found herself experiencing, in a very personal way, the realities of a war taking place in Ukraine, the other side of the border.
On television, she watched how a reporter, broadcasting live from the port area, suddenly run for cover as something exploded a short distance behind her.
At almost the same moment, the blast wave reached Niculescu’s apartment a few kilometres away, rattling the windows and shaking the building.
“Since then, I have been living with the fear that the war in Ukraine has reached our country as well,” Niculescu said. “I keep asking myself how protected we really are and how safe our lives remain today.”
