Elon Musk is de eerste biljonair ooit, nadat vorige week zijn ruimtebedrijf SpaceX naar de beurs was gegaan. En sinds die beursgang is hij nog eens honderden miljarden rijker, want de koers van het aandeel steeg deze week door.
Hij zou elk persoon op aarde 100 dollar kunnen geven en nog tot de tien rijkste mensen ter wereld behoren. Dat roept de vraag op wat Musk aan liefdadigheid en goede doelen besteedt.
Ter verduidelijking: het biljoen waarover het gaat, bestaat voor een groot deel de waarde van aandelen. Die kan hij dus niet zomaar omzetten in geld.
Goede doelen
Toch zijn er vermogende Amerikanen voor wie dit ook geldt, maar die wel een groot deel van hun vermogen doneren aan goede doelen of dat in een stichting stoppen die dat voor hen doet.
Bekende voorbeelden zijn MacKenzie Scott (Amazon), Warren Buffet (Berkshire Hathaway) en Bill Gates (Microsoft). Die laatste twee richtten in 2010 ' The Giving Pledge (opent in nieuw venster) ' op, waarbij de rijken der aarde beloven om minimaal de helft van hun bezit aan goede doelen te geven of dit in hun testament op te laten nemen.

Musk ondertekende dit ook, al blijft de vraag of hij dat ook daadwerkelijk gaat doen. Hij doneerde vorig jaar minder dan 0,1 procent van zijn totale vermogen aan een goed doel of stichting, viel in februari te lezen in zakenblad Forbes (opent in nieuw venster) .
De 'pledge' is een publiek statement en heeft geen juridisch bindend consequenties als dit niet gebeurt. "De vraag is hoe hij hier invulling aan geeft, eerst zien dan geloven, zeg ik maar", aldus filantropie-adviseur Pieter Stemerding. Met zijn bedrijf Philos geeft hij advies aan vermogende families over hoe zij hun geld kunnen inzetten zodat dat een maatschappelijk belang dient.

Musk staat niet in de lijst van gulle gevers in Amerika. Opmerkelijk, vindt hoogleraar filantropie aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Pamala Wiepking. Juist in Amerika is de norm om veel te geven aan goede doelen. "Veel sociale problemen worden daar anders niet opgelost. Musk lijkt zich in andere sociale kringen te bevinden waar juist meer het eigenbelang vooropstaat", zegt Wiepking.
Wat is filantropie?
Als je het Musk zelf vraagt, doet hij al heel veel aan filantropie. Dat blijkt ook uit een interview (opent in nieuw venster) met Chris Anderson in 2022. "Als je zegt dat filantropie liefde voor de mensheid is, dan zijn mijn bedrijven filantropisch. Tesla versnelt duurzame energie, SpaceX probeert het voortbestaan van mensen op de lange termijn te waarborgen en met Neuralink proberen we hersenletsel op te lossen met behulp van kunstmatige intelligentie."
Wiepking heeft daar echter haar twijfels bij. "Ik betwijfel hoe sociaal zijn ondernemingen zijn. Filantropie is een private bijdrage voor het publieke goed en hier gaat het veel ook om eigen gewin."
Er is in ieder geval één groep die van het succes van Musk meeprofiteert. De duizenden werknemers van SpaceX hebben ook aandelen in het bedrijf gekregen en zijn sinds de beursgang ineens veel rijker.
Musk Foundation
Musk heeft kritiek op het geven aan goede doelen. Het is volgens hem lastig om geld te geven dat echt ten goede komt aan de problemen van mensen en niet alleen maar de schijn wekt dat je goed bezig bent.
Daar worstelt hij met zijn eigen Musk Foundation (opent in nieuw venster) ook mee, zegt hij. Vorig jaar maakte The New York Times bekend (opent in nieuw venster) dat zijn stichting voor de helft investeert in zijn eigen bedrijven of werknemers. Ook zou hij meer dan zeven miljard dollar aan Tesla-aandelen hebben gedoneerd aan de stichting tussen 2020 en 2024. Zo hoefde hij een stuk minder belasting te betalen.
USAID
Daarnaast is onder leiding van Musk de hulporganisatie USAID opgedoekt . Hij kreeg van president Trump de taak om te snijden in de kosten van de Amerikaanse overheid.
Al met al lopen de meningen uiteen over of Musk wel of geen filantroop is. Stemerding kan daar alleen maar om lachen. "Ik zou graag zien dat hij zich inzet vanuit een sociaal motief, maar heb nog geen bewijs voor deze stelling. Hij heeft elektrisch rijden op de kaart gezet, verder ken ik geen voorbeelden van zijn maatschappelijke betrokkenheid."
