Henry's criticism centred on a second-half attacking sequence involving Joao Cancelo and Bruno Fernandes. The former Barcelona striker argued that Ronaldo's movement towards the ball crowded a dangerous area and ultimately made life easier for the Congolese defence.

Ronaldo's performance against DR Congo was always likely to attract scrutiny given the events of the previous 24 hours.
While the Portuguese icon struggled to impose himself in Houston, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland all dominated the headlines. Messi scored a hat-trick against Algeria to become the oldest player to net a World Cup treble and draw level with Miroslav Klose's all-time tournament goals record. The 41-year-old managed just 25 touches and failed to register a shot on target as Portugal were held to a draw by a disciplined DR Congo side. Having also failed to score at Euro 2024 and in Portugal's pre-World Cup friendlies against Chile and Nigeria, concerns about his influence at the highest level have only intensified.
To be fair, Portugal's star-studded midfield also struggled to provide the service required. Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha and Joao Neves controlled possession for long periods but lacked the imagination needed to consistently break down DR Congo's defensive shape.
Yet Henry's argument is that the issue extends beyond creativity. In his view, Portugal cannot afford to become consumed by helping Ronaldo chase individual milestones. The team, he believes, must remain the priority.
That debate is unlikely to disappear anytime soon. Ronaldo remains one goal away from becoming the first player to score in six different World Cups, while Portugal continue to harbour ambitions of winning the tournament. But after their opening match, Henry's verdict has added a fresh layer to the conversation surrounding one of football's greatest-ever players.
