La mañana del sábado 13 de junio fue asesinado a balazos Joel Ángel Bravo Martínez , presidente municipal de San Miguel Amatitlán .
De acuerdo con los primeros reportes, el edil fue atacado por un grupo de hombres armados que irrumpieron en su domicilio y abrieron fuego en su contra alrededor de las 8:00 de la mañana. El crimen ocurrió apenas semanas después de que el alcalde sufriera un asalto cuando transitaba por la carretera Acatlán-Oaxaca , a la altura del municipio de Santiago Petlalcingo, en Puebla.

Tras los hechos, la Fiscalía General del Estado de Oaxaca (FGEO) confirmó el inicio de las investigaciones ministeriales y periciales para esclarecer el homicidio del funcionario municipal, quien gobernaba bajo el Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) .

Tras darse a conocer el asesinato del alcalde , muchas personas comenzaron a buscar información sobre San Miguel Amatitlán , el municipio donde ocurrió el ataque .
Se trata de una población ubicada al noroeste de Oaxaca, dentro de la región Mixteca , y funge como cabecera del municipio que lleva el mismo nombre. Su denominación combina dos referencias históricas: “San Miguel”, en honor al Arcángel Miguel , considerado patrono de la comunidad, y “ Amatitlán ”, palabra derivada del náhuatl que puede interpretarse como “ entre los amates ”, en referencia al árbol del papel amate .

Durante la época colonial, la localidad recibió distintos nombres, entre ellos Rancho del Recibimiento y Rancho de los Jacales . Más tarde, tras la Independencia de México, fue reconocida oficialmente como pueblo y se estableció su municipalidad el 31 de agosto de 1831.

El municipio forma parte del distrito de Huajuapan , dentro de la Mixteca oaxaqueña , y es uno de los 570 municipios de Oaxaca .

Limita con municipios como Santiago Ayuquililla, Heroica Ciudad de Huajuapan de León, San Jerónimo Silacayoapilla, San Marcos Arteaga, Santos Reyes Yucuná, San Simón Zahuatlán, San Martín Zacatepec, Mariscala de Juárez y Fresnillo de Trujano.
Por su territorio atraviesan importantes corrientes de agua vinculadas a la subcuenca del río Mixteco , integrada a la cuenca del río Atoyac. Entre los afluentes más relevantes de la zona destacan el Río Balsas, Río Grande, Zapote y Río Sabino .
