Großbritanniens Regierungschef Keir Starmer hat nach den Warnschüssen einer russischen Fregatte in Richtung eines Segelbootes im Ärmelkanal zu Wachsamkeit aufgerufen. Es sei ein "Fakt, dass Russland offenkundig quer durch Europa aggressiv ist", sagte Starmer dem Sender GB News. Die von der "Admiral Grigorowitsch" abgegebenen Warnschüsse seien "leichtsinnig" gewesen.
Kriegsschiff lief wohl nicht unter Motorkraft
Zugleich erläuterte Starmer, bei der russischen Fregatte habe es sich um ein im Wasser "treibendes Kriegsschiff" gehandelt und "nicht um etwas weiter Bedrohliches".

Nach Angaben aus Kreisen des britischen Verteidigungsministeriums war das Kriegsschiff zum Zeitpunkt des Vorfalls offenbar nicht mit Motorkraft gesteuert worden, sondern trieb durch den Ärmelkanal. Dies könnte an Bord zu dem Gefühl geführt haben, "dass sie verletzlicher waren". Zum Zeitpunkt des Zwischenfalls soll dichter Nebel geherrscht haben.
Rentner-Ehepaar widerspricht russischer Darstellung
Die Segler der in Großbritannien registrierten Jacht "Bright Future" kritisierten die Warnschüsse als ungerechtfertigt. Das Rentner-Ehepaar, das auf dem Weg von England nach Frankreich war, gab an, sofort auf Warnungen per Schiffshorn reagiert zu haben, als sich die Jacht dem Kriegsschiff auf etwa 500 Meter angenähert habe.
Laut einem Beamten im britischen Verteidigungsministerium ereignete sich der Zwischenfall etwa 20 Seemeilen südlich der Isle of Wight, kurz außerhalb der britischen Hoheitsgewässer. Berichten zufolge begleitete die "Admiral Grigorowitsch" Tanker der sogenannten russischen Schattenflotte.
Den Vorwurf Russlands, ihre Jacht habe sich auf einem "gefährlichen" Kollisionskurs befunden, wies Rentnerin Jane Kelvey im britischen Sender BBC zurück. Den Vorfall bezeichneten sie und ihr Mann Alan als "surreal".
Jane Kelvey schilderte, nachdem fünfmal das Horn des russischen Kriegsschiffs erklungen sei, hätten sie ihr Boot "sofort zwei Grad Richtung Hafen gewendet, so dass sie sehen konnten, dass wir eine absichtliche Kursänderung vorgenommen haben, wir sie also gesehen haben". Etwa eine Minute später sei das Signalhorn der Russen erneut fünfmal erklungen und direkt danach habe die Schiffsbesatzung "vier bis fünf Schüsse kleinen Kalibers" abgegeben. "Das galt nicht uns - es waren Warnschüsse in die Luft, glauben wir", sagte Jane Kelvey.
Moskau: Jacht hat auf Kontaktversuche nicht reagiert
Das Verteidigungsministerium in Moskau hatte am Dienstag erklärt, das Segelboot habe sich dem russischen Kriegsschiff "gefährlich angenähert". Die Jacht habe auf mehrere Kontaktversuche nicht reagiert und die Distanz immer weiter verringert. Bei einer Entfernung von 150 Metern habe der Kapitän der Fregatte dann den Befehl zum Eröffnen der Warnschüsse gegeben. Zuvor seien vom Kriegsschiff "Signalraketen" abgefeuert worden, um die Aufmerksamkeit der Segler zu erlangen.
"Die Besatzung der Fregatte 'Admiral Grigorowitsch' hat in strenger Übereinkunft mit den international geltenden Schifffahrtsregeln gehandelt und alles getan, um einen Vorfall zu verhindern", betonte das Ministerium in Moskau.
Britisches Verteidigungsministerium beschwichtigt
Das britische Verteidigungsministerium folgte der Argumentation in Moskau. Die Schüsse seien nicht auf die Jacht gerichtet gewesen, sondern der Versuch gewesen, einen möglichen Zusammenstoß zu verhindern, zitierte die Nachrichtenagentur PA einen Sprecher des Ministeriums in London.

Die britischen Marine hat nach eigenen Angaben im April mehrere Patrouillenschiffe eingesetzt, um die "Admiral Grigorowitsch" zu beobachten. Zum Zeitpunkt des Vorfalls war offenbar die "HMS Mersey" im Einsatz.

Erst am Sonntag hatte die britische Marine im Ärmelkanal einen mutmaßlich zur russischen Schattenflotte gehörenden Öltanker aufgebracht . Dabei enterten Soldaten den mit internationalen Sanktionen belegten Öltanker "Smyrtos". Das britische Verteidigungsministerium wies jedoch einen Zusammenhang zwischen den beiden jüngsten Vorfällen im Ärmelkanal zurück.
