Seriál vychází z knihy George R. R. Martina Oheň a krev a odehrává se 200 let před událostmi Hry o trůny. Vypráví příběh rodu Targaryenů. Plynule navazuje na události druhé řady a Západozemí se v ní zmítá v brutální občanské válce.

Jisté také je, že po třetí řadě vznikne ještě jedna, čtvrtá, která seriál oficiálně uzavře. Za diváky by pak měla dorazit v roce 2028.

Natáčení fantasy seriálu probíhá především ve Velké Británii. Filmaři využili také lokality třeba ve Španělsku a Kalifornii. Z pohledu diváckého zájmu patří k velkým hitům. První série měla deset dílů, druhá už „jen“ osm, u čehož zůstala i třetí série.

Vůbec první díl byl spuštěn v jedenadvaceti evropských zemích v pondělí 22. srpna 2022 ve tři hodiny ráno středoevropského času. Mnozí fanoušci si nastavili budík, někteří raději nešli spát vůbec, vrchol sledovanosti pak přišel večer. V USA přilákala premiéra 10 milionů diváků, a stala se tak tehdy rovněž naprostým vítězem v historii seriálů uváděných na HBO.

Do natáčení druhé série pak výrazně vstoupila pandemie covidu-19.
