Jakarta (ANTARA) - German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to working with Indonesia to uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter amid rising violence and conflicts in various parts of the world.
During his state visit to Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday, Steinmeier said Germany and Indonesia share a commitment to supporting a rules-based international order and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
Steinmeier made the remarks against the backdrop of multiple global crises driven by ongoing armed conflicts. He cited wars and conflicts in Europe, Central Asia, and Sudan as examples of challenges facing the international community.
According to him, the partnership between Germany and Indonesia is particularly important in the current global environment, which is marked by instability and armed conflict. He noted that bilateral relations have been grounded in a shared commitment to international rules since the adoption of the Jakarta Declaration in 2012.
The German president said this rules-based partnership should continue to deepen in the years ahead. He added that cooperation between the two countries extends beyond political affairs to include climate action, education, research, and cultural exchanges.
Through this shared commitment, both countries hope to contribute to global stability amid evolving geopolitical dynamics. Strengthening adherence to international law and established rules, he said, remains essential to resolving disputes and maintaining peace.
The bilateral meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and President Steinmeier provided an opportunity for both leaders to exchange views on foreign policy issues. Germany and Indonesia agreed that respect for international law is a key foundation for achieving long-term peace.
Earlier, President Prabowo emphasized that strengthening and sustaining the partnership between Indonesia and Germany is one of the government’s priorities.
Steinmeier’s state visit reflects the strong and growing bilateral relationship between the two countries.
“I am very confident that Germany must play a more active and more important role because we need good partnerships with Germany and with Europe,” Prabowo said.
