According to a laundry expert, there is one product you should never use in the washing machine. As reported by the Daily Star, there are many reasons for this, but the advice is clear: “Stop using a product that could damage your clothes and, according to some, even your washing machine.”
An industry expert has issued a warning about a certain product, emphasizing that there are many reasons why you shouldn’t keep it in your home. The expert also offered some recommendations on alternative methods for washing clothes. In a post published on social media platform X, the consumer expert stated: “Should you use fabric softener when washing clothes? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is no. It may work for a short time on new clothes.”
She went on to say, “Over time, it can damage the fibers in your clothes, leaving them stiff and crunchy instead of soft. It can also cause skin irritation. Instead, I’d soak my clothes in a mixture of white vinegar and water before rinsing them and putting them in the washing machine.”
“I’d keep fabric softener well away from towels,” he explained, “because it can actually reduce their ability to absorb water.” So the best way to soften towels is to give them a quick spin in the dryer, but then dry them outdoors on a warm, breezy day.
The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) also warns that people with eczema should avoid using them. The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust website states: “ People with eczema should pay special attention to items that come into direct contact with the skin. Fragrances (perfumes) and detergents can cause skin reactions. Air fresheners, candles, scented wax melts, and diffusers are also irritants and should be avoided. To keep the situation under control, you can: use non-biological laundry detergents; use the washing machine’s extra rinse cycle, if available; and avoid using fabric softener.”
