The police have initiated a preliminary investigation into the damage of a memorial commemorating the Russian opposition politician Navalny

The Helsinki police have initiated a preliminary investigation into the vandalism of a memorial plaque dedicated to Alexei Navalny, a Russian opposition politician. The plaque was damaged by fire last week near the Russian embassy in Helsinki. Police are currently checking if there are any surveillance camera recordings of the incident and are considering cooperating with the Russian embassy for potential footage. No eyewitnesses have been reported at this time.

Helsingin poliisi on aloittanut esitutkinnan venäläisen oppositiopoliitikko Aleksei Navalnyin muistomerkin vahingoittamisesta.

Venäjän suurlähetystön lähellä Neitsytpuistikossa sijaitsevaa muistomerkkiä vahingoitettiin polttamalla viime viikolla. Uutisoimme asiasta perjantaina . Muistomerkkipenkki oli asennettu paikalle reilu viikko aiemmin.

Rikoskomisario Tommi Lehtonen kertoo, että rikosnimikkeenä on vahingonteko.

Poliisi selvittää parhaillaan, onko tapahtuneesta valvontakameratallenteita. Silminnäkijähavaintoja teosta ei tällä hetkellä ole.

Vieressä sijaitsevasta Venäjän suurlähetystöstä poliisi ei ole vielä ehtinyt kysyä valvontakamerakuvaa, mutta harkitsee yhteistyötä myös heidän kanssaan.

– Muistomerkkiasia on maailman tapahtumat huomioiden tavallaan herkkä asia, mutta mahdollisesti kysymme tallenteita myös heiltä.

Esitutkintaan voi mennä muutamia kuukausia tai se päättyy nopeasti, jos mitään näyttöä ei löydy, Lehtonen sanoo.
