A pickup truck ran out of fuel and crashed into a tree in Maasmechelen after a chase of nearly 100 kilometers

A man was arrested in Maasmechelen after a nearly 100-kilometer police chase following an attempted evasion of a traffic stop in the area of Wommelgem, Antwerp. In Maasmechelen is gisteren een man gearresteerd na een lange politieachtervolging.  De bestuurder zou in de regio van Wommelgem in Antwerpen een politiecontrole hebben ontvlucht. Na bijna 100 kilometer reed hij met zijn wagen tegen een boom in Maasmechelen aan een lage snelheid, zijn brandstoftank was intussen leeg.

De achtervolging startte in de omgeving van Wommelgem. Dat schrijven de kranten van Mediahuis en de politie bevestigt het nieuws. De bestuurder wilde daar een politiecontrole ontvluchten.

De ploegen van de politiezone Minos (Boechout-Borsbeek-Mortsel-Wijnegem-Wommelgem) hebben daarop de achtervolging ingezet. Verschillende Limburgse politieploegen hebben bijstand geleverd, waaronder ook politiezone LaMa.

Na een achtervolging van bijna 100 kilometer kwam het voertuig tot stilstand op de Steenweg naar As in Maasmechelen. "Hij is daar tegen een boom gereden. Dat gebeurde met een lage snelheid, omdat de tank intussen leeg was", vertelt Amber Mach, woordvoerder bij de politiezone LaMa.

De bestuurder werd gearresteerd. Het is voorlopig nog niet duidelijk waarom hij wilde vluchten. Het onderzoek wordt gevoerd door de lokale politie Minos.
