Toddler injured in English crocodile enclosure, man suspected of attempted murder

In het midden van Engeland is een man gearresteerd op verdenking van poging tot moord op een 3-jarig jongetje. De peuter kwam vandaag in een krokodillenverblijf van een dierentuin terecht en liep daarbij zware verwondingen op.

Wat er is gebeurd, is nog niet bekendgemaakt. Het jongetje is naar het ziekenhuis gebracht en verkeert in kritieke maar stabiele toestand, meldt de politie van Cambridgeshire aan persbureau Reuters.

Een 30-jarige man uit Norfolk is gearresteerd. De politie denkt dat de man en het kind elkaar niet kennen.

Omgebouwde veestal

De dierentuin hoort bij het agrarische familiebedrijf Johnson's of Old Hurst met ook een slagerij, een boerderijwinkel, een theesalon en een steakhouse, staat vermeld op de website. In de dierentuin leven meer dan honderd dieren, waaronder krokodillen, Bengaalse tijgers, Afrikaanse leeuwen, capibara's, stokstaartjes en lippenberen.

De krokodillen worden gehouden in een omgebouwde veestal met verhoogde loopbruggen voor de bezoekers, die zijn omheind met metalen hekken, schrijft Sky News (opent in nieuw venster) . Het verblijf maakt deel uit van het zogeheten Tropical House op het terrein.

"Onze gedachten en gebeden zijn bij de jongen en zijn familie na het incident dat vandaag heeft plaatsgevonden", laat het bedrijf in een verklaring op Instagram weten. "Uit respect voor de familie blijft ons Tropical House tot nader order gesloten."
