Papež Lev XIV. ve středu večer požehnal a tím i otevřel nejvyšší kostelní věž Ježíše Krista v chrámu Svaté rodiny (Sagrada Familia), která se stala nejvyšší kostelní stavbou na světě. Na své dokončení chrám čeká od konce 19. století, tehdy své vize do návrhu promítl katalánský architekt Antoni Gaudí. Ve své homilii papež připomněl, že nelze věřit v Ježíše Krista a podporovat války.
Papež Lev XIV. složil mši v bazilice a pak se přesunul před kostel, kde udělil požehnání nové věži. Ta se tyčí do výšky 172,5 metru a překonala věž chrámu v německém Ulmu, která rekord držela před tím. Výstavba barcelonské baziliky začala v roce 1882, když byl v čele církve Lev XIII., a stále neskončila. Gaudí byl horlivým katolíkem a církev ho v současnosti považuje za ctihodného, což je jeden z úvodních kroků procesu kanonizace.
Papež se na věřící obrátil ve španělštině a katalánštině. V proslovu připomněl svého předchůdce Benedikta XVI., který barcelonský chrám označil při své návštěvě v roce 2010 za „viditelný symbol neviditelného Boha“.
Mše v barcelonském chrámu se zúčastnil král Felipe VI. s chotí, velká část španělské vlády včetně premiéra Pedra Sáncheze či katalánský premiér Salvador Illa.
Do chrámu papež přijel automobilem krátce před 19. hodinou. Podél trasy se shromáždili lidé, které hlava katolické církve zdravila, a během zastavení žehnal kojencům, které mu z davu podávala ochranka. Po příjezdu a před samotnou mší Lev XIV. navštívil kryptu, kde je pohřben architekt Gaudí. Podle agentury EFE papež od svého středečního příjezdu do Barcelony požehnal desítkám malých dětí.
Papežova návštěva Španelska
Ve středu papež mimo jiné navštívil věznici Brians 1 nedaleko Barcelony, kde pronesl projev k vězňům. „V našem životě minulost není rozsudkem nad budoucností,“ uvedl papež.
Později vrtulníkem odletěl do opatství v Montserratu, které je v Katalánsku významným poutním místem. Papež tam věřící vyzval, aby pěstovali lásku „v rodině, mezi přáteli, na pracovištích, na sociálních sítích, v politických debatách a v křesťanských komunitách“. Současně odmítl „kritiku, která ponižuje, odsouzení, které ničí, a agresivitu, která rozděluje“. Některá média ale poukázala na to, že papež nezmínil mnohé sexuální skandály, kterým v minulosti opatství čelilo.
Papež přiletěl na návštěvu Španělska v sobotu a do Barcelony se z Madridu přesunul v úterý. Ve svých dosavadních projevech apeloval na přijetí migrantů, kritizoval nadměrné štěpení společnosti a vyzval k ochraně lidského života od početí až do smrti, čímž kritizoval potraty i eutanazii. Španělsko zavedlo eutanazii před několika lety.
Ve čtvrtek se papež v rámci své nejdelší cesty po Evropě přesune na Kanárské ostrovy, kde zůstane do pátku, kdy se vrátí do Vatikánu. Hlavním tématem této poslední části cesty má být migrace.
