No sign of coordinated attack, Lithuanian authorities say after another cyber incident

Lithuania’s institutions are not under a coordinated cyber attack, Antanas Aleknavičius, the head of the National Cyber Security Centre (NKVC), told reporters on Wednesday after another large-scale hacking incident.

On Wednesday, the authorities announced that 62,000 records that include personal details about doctors have been leaked from the State Health Care Accreditation Agency. Last month, real estate data of more than 600,000 people was leaked from the Centre of Registers.

"We consider these to be separate, isolated incidents," Aleknavičius said. "The nature of the incident and the way it was carried out are different. Vulnerabilities and weaknesses in the system were exploited."

Authorities are currently assessing the scope of the vulnerability and whether it could potentially be exploited in other systems. "We have received the initial reports and are verifying the data so that we can determine how serious the threat is. [...] We learned about the incident last night and registered it immediately. The agency followed the procedures set out in the law," the NKVC chief said.

Prosecutors launch probe

Lithuania's Prosecutor General's Office on Wednesday opened a pre-trial investigation into the theft of healthcare workers' data. ​ "Today we received a report from the Health Ministry, and today a pre-trial investigation was launched [...] into unauthorised access to information systems," Prosecutor General Nida Grunskienė told reporters. ​ The compromised data also included information on the training qualifications of administrators from around 156 healthcare institutions, as well as technical system metadata.
