Srpska pravoslavna crkva 18. juna proslavlja Svetog sveštenomučenika Doroteja, episkopa tirskog, jednog od znamenitih ranohrišćanskih svetitelja koji je svoj dug život posvetio služenju Crkvi, propovedanju Jevanđelja i odbrani pravoslavne vere.

Sveti Dorotej bio je episkop grada Tira u vreme cara Dioklecijana, poznatog po jednom od najtežih progona hrišćana u istoriji Rimskog carstva.

Kada je započelo gonjenje vernih, bio je prinuđen da napusti svoju episkopsku katedru i skloni se kako bi sačuvao život i nastavio da služi Crkvi.

Posle dolaska cara Konstantina Velikog na vlast i prestanka progona hrišćana, nastupilo je vreme mira za Crkvu. Tada se Sveti Dorotej vratio u Tir i nastavio svoju arhipastirsku službu među vernim narodom.

Međutim, novi talas stradanja usledio je za vreme cara Julijana Odstupnika, koji je nastojao da obnovi paganstvo i oslabi hrišćanstvo. Iako progoni nisu u početku bili javni, hrišćani su širom carstva bili izloženi pritiscima, mučenjima i ubistvima. Zbog toga je Sveti Dorotej ponovo bio primoran da napusti svoj presto i potraži utočište.

Iz Tira je otišao u Malu Aziju, nadajući se da će tamo pronaći mir, ali nije uspeo da izbegne progonitelje. Ubrzo je otkriven, uhvaćen i podvrgnut teškim mukama zbog svoje nepokolebljive vere u Hrista. Mučenički je postradao 361. godine, zadobivši venac večne slave.

Predanje beleži da je Sveti Dorotej doživeo čak 107 godina, što ga svrstava među najdugovečnije svetitelje ranog hrišćanstva. Bio je poznat i po velikom obrazovanju , govorio je grčki i latinski jezik i ostavio brojna poučna dela. Posebno mesto među njegovim spisima zauzima grčko-latinska "Sintagma“, koja je vekovima bila cenjena među hrišćanskim piscima.

Njegove pouke ostale su sačuvane do danas kao podsetnik na značaj duhovne discipline i poslušnosti Crkvi. Među njima se posebno izdvaja savet:

"Nikada ne narušavaj post u sredu i u petak. Taj post je Crkvom zapoveđen i dobro obrazložen. Ako si ikad u životu narušio taj post, moli se Bogu da ti oprosti, i više ne greši.“
