At least 11 soldiers killed in a jihadist attack at Niger's airport

At least 11 soldiers and two civilians were killed in an attack on Niger's main airport in Niamey. The Islamic group JNIM, linked to Al-Qaeda, has claimed responsibility for the attack. The assault began early Thursday morning and lasted several hours according to witnesses. Niger's security forces shot dead over 20 armed attackers and arrested the same number. Niger has been under military rule for three years, during which Islamist groups have conducted an increasingly intense armed resistance campaign.

Nigerin pääkaupungin Niameyn lentokentälle kohdistetussa hyökkäyksessä torstaina kuoli ainakin 11 sotilasta ja kaksi siviiliä. Islamistinen ryhmä JNIM, jolla on yhteyksiä terroristiverkosto al-Qaidaan, on ottanut vastuun hyökkäyksestä.
