CCTV footage of inmates following child killer before fatal prison attack

Chilling CCTV footage captures the moment three of the UK's most dangerous inmates entered the cell of infamous child killer Kyle Bevan before stabbing him 25 times in a five-minute knife frenzy - and then stood around laughing.

Mark Fellows, a gangland assassin known as 'The Iceman,' Lee Newell who had already killed one child murderer in prison and David Taylor, who stabbed a detective in a police interview, gathered to launch their knife attack on Bevan, 33, in his cell at HMP Wakefield last November. After leaving the cell they are seen laughing and joking with each other.

Infamous Bevan was serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 28 years for murdering his partner's two-year-old daughter, Lola James, in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, in 2020.

The three men were seen on CCTV following Bevan into his cell shortly after 5.30pm on November 4 and emerging less than five minutes later in "a satisfied, job-done mood", prosecutors said.

Fellows and Newell were already serving whole life orders at the time of their fatal attack on Bevan last November. Taylor was on remand at the time of Bevan's stabbing for the murder of missing 24-year-old Alisha Apostoloff-Boyarin – a vulnerable woman he was in a relationship with but had grown tired of – and attempting to murder a police officer in an interview room at another high-security jail. He was given a whole life order for the offences.

Bevan was "put to bed" after the attack and was not discovered until the following morning when prison staff were alerted by an inmate that "something was wrong" with him. It was established that he had bled to death after suffering 25 stab wounds inflicted with at least two different weapons.

On Thursday, a jury at Leeds Crown Court deliberated for less than three hours before finding Fellows, Newell and Taylor guilty of murder.

At Leeds Crown Court today Newell and Fellows received 'new and separate' whole life terms while Taylor also received a whole life term for the murders of Bevan and Miss Apostoloff-Boyarin and the attempted murder of a police officer.

Fellows, 45, was a gangland hitman, carrying out so-called 'contract killings' for gangsters in the north-west of England. He is nicknamed “Iceman” for his calm exterior.

He was already serving a whole life sentence for the gangland slaying of Salford 'Mr Big' John Massey and his Merseyside enforcer John Kinsella.

He used an Uzi sub-machine gun to kill Massey in July 2015 before shooting Kinsella to death three years later.

Meanwhile Newell was jailed in 1989 after he conned his way into his 56-year-old neighbour Mary Neal’s home where he strangled her to death before making off with £60.

In February 2013 he took child killer Subhan Anwar hostage inside his cell at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire before strangling him with his own tracksuit bottoms. He also lost an eye in a prison brawl with double murderer Gary Vinter in the exercise yard at HMP Woodhill.

Taylor has a long criminal history, with a series of armed robberies dating back to the mid-1980s. He admitted to the murder of 'vulnerable' 24-year-old Alisha Apostoloff-Boyarin in 2022. However he has never old her family where he body is.

While on remand for the crime he lured police to to HMP Frankland where he was being held, saying he wanted to share new information about her disappearance. But when he was in a police interview room, he lunged across the table, stabbing Detective Constable Darren Bratby with an improvised weapon he had hidden in his waistband.

In a victim impact statement, Miss Apostoloff-Boyarin's great-aunt, Theresa Robinson, said the “last four years have been a living nightmare”.

“Despite him pleading guilty the pain will continue as we do not have answers as to why this has happened and more importantly where Alisha is now,” she said.

“This man knows where Alisha is and if he had any remorse for what he has done he would allow us to bring her home and put her to rest beside her mother and grandmother.

“I beg he finds it in his heart to do the decent thing and tell us where Alisha's body is.”

Today Taylor was given a whole-life order for murdering Alisha and Bevan as well as the attempted murder of DC Bratby. He appeared flanked by officers in riot gear and wearing two pairs of handcuffs.
