Metro inspector suspended over alleged bribery later made stationmaster, operator says

A ticket inspector at Athens' metro and tram operator STASY was suspended over allegations of bribery but was later reassigned to a stationmaster role while his case remains under judicial review. The inspector reportedly accepted €20 payments from fare-evading passengers to avoid issuing €100 fines, according to security footage cited by ANT1. STASY stated the reassignment followed internal procedures and emphasized the presumption of innocence during legal proceedings. The new role does not involve handling money or managing train traffic.

Athens metro and tram operator STASY has confirmed that a ticket inspector who was suspended over allegations of taking bribes from fare evaders was later assigned to a stationmaster role while his case is still before the courts.

The inspector was initially removed from duty following complaints that he solicited €20 payments from ticketless passengers to avoid issuing €100 fines.

According to a report on ANT1, security camera footage allegedly showed him accepting bribes and subsequently using his card to allow passengers through turnstiles.

An employees’ representative said the inspector had since been working as a stationmaster.

In a statement, STASY said the reassignment did not constitute a promotion and followed established procedures, citing the presumption of innocence while legal proceedings are ongoing. It said the employee was initially suspended, referred to the National Transparency Authority and subject to criminal prosecution.

“The employee returned to the company with a change of specialty. He was placed in the position of janitor and then assumed the duties of stationmaster, following his participation in a relevant internal procedure and after completing the required training,” the company said.

The position of “stationmaster does not include the management or collection of money and is not related to financial transactions or train traffic management,” it said.
