Zusammen mit den beiden im Nachbarland Uganda verstorbenen Patienten und Patientinnen seien es nun 204 Tote, sagte Wessam Mankoula, ein Vertreter der Behörde, heute. Inzwischen gebe es 894 bestätigte Fälle, davon 875 im Kongo. Insgesamt 74 Menschen gelten als genesen.

In keinem anderen Ebola-Ausbruch auf dem Kontinent sei die Zahl der bestätigten Fälle im ersten Monat so hoch gewesen, sagte Mankoula. Das seien dreimal so viele wie beim zweithöchsten Ausbruch. Besondere Sorge bereite den Fachleuten die geringe Zahl der nachverfolgten Kontakte.

Nur 4.112 Kontakte bestätigter Ebola-Patienten und -Patientinnen würden derzeit aktiv nachverfolgt. Es sei jedoch von etwa 35.000 bestehenden Kontakten auszugehen. „Wir sind sehr weit davon entfernt, die Situation unter Kontrolle zu haben“, warnte Mankoula.
