Pomník byl původně situován v jihovýchodní části Malostranského náměstí, kde v současnosti vede silnice a tramvajové koleje, takže nové umístění má být jinde. Pomník by měl stát zhruba uprostřed volného prostranství na spodní části náměstí, Radecký by hleděl na budovu Poslanecké sněmovny.

Spolek Radecký podle svého místopředsedy Michaela Herese připravil kompletní projekt návratu sochy. „Návrh byl projednáván s památkáři, architekty, urbanisty, kunsthistoriky, restaurátory a samozřejmě i s veřejností,“ řekl Heres. Dodal, že Radeckého kořeny byly hluboce spojeny s českými zeměmi a s Prahou a pomník byl od počátku projektem české kulturní obce.

Záměr podpořil i radní města pro kulturu Tomáš Slabihoudek (TOP 09). „Nevnímám to jako nějaký návrat monarchie, vnímám to jako návrat významného uměleckého díla,“ vysvětlil radní. Stejně tak se na jednání za návrat sochy postavila starostka Prahy 1 Terezie Radoměřská (TOP 09). „Jedná se o velmi významnou historickou osobnost,“ popsala starostka.

Rakouský maršál Josef Václav Radecký z Radče byl český šlechtic a je považován za jednoho z nejlepších vojevůdců 19. století. Maršálův pomník od profesora Christiana Rubena a sochařů Josefa a Emanuela Maxových byl na Malostranském náměstí odhalen v roce 1858.

Stál zde do roku 1919, kdy se stal jedním ze symbolů spojovaných s habsburskou monarchií a z toho důvodu byl rozebrán a uložen do Lapidária. Později byl odstraněn i podstavec.
