Politiet i Huntingdonshire rykket ut etter å ha fått meldinger om «en hendelse med en tre år gammel gutt, som endte opp i krokodilleinnhegningen».

En innbygger i området sier at dyrehageeierens kone, Tracey Johnson, hoppet inn i innhegning for å redde gutten. Han ble kjørt til sykehus i Cambridge og beskrives som kritisk skadet, men stabil.

– For å få bedre oversikt over omstendighetene, snakker vi med folk som var i dyrehagen under denne skremmende hendelsen. Vi tror ikke mannen og barnet kjente hverandre fra før, sier politiinspektør Verity McCann.

Johnsons Zoo, som ligger rundt 25 kilometer nord for universitetsbyen Cambridge, sier de vil holde stengt inntil videre, i respekt for guttens familie.

– Våre tanker er med ham og familien etter det som skjedde i dag, heter det i en uttalelse fra dyrehagen.

Dyrehagen har over 100 arter, inkludert løver, tigre, leppebjørner og surikater.
